To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

Katajisto laboratory studies how tissue stem cells renew and regenerate tissues, and how the capacity of the tissue stem cells declines during aging. We are interested in interactions between stem cells and their microenvironment, and investigate how metabolism can influence the decisions stem cells make between deifferentiation and self-renewal. We study multiple tissue stem cell models, such as those in intestine, skin, muscle and mammary glands, and develop cutting edge ex vivo research systems for example by 3D printing tissue mimetic scaffolds for stem cell culture. 

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

The doctoral student will study how metabolism of a cell is influenced by the types of mitochondria the cell has, and use mitochondrial transfer as an approach to alter metabolism and fate decisions in the recipient cells. She/he will run independent experimentation taking the benefit of our novel mouse models and organellar targeting approaches.

Eligibility requirements for doctoral education

In order to participate in the selection for a doctoral position, you must meet the following general (A) and specific (B) eligibility requirements at latest by the application deadline.

A) General eligibility requirementYou meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree), or
2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

– Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Verification of your documents Karolinska Institutet checks the authenticity of your documents. Karolinska Institutet reserves the right to revoke admission if supporting documents are discovered to be fraudulent. (A) and (B) can only be certified by the documentation requirement for doctoral education.

Skills and personal qualities

The candidate should have experience with cell culture, preferably with stem cells or organoids. Experience in mitochondrial biology, either metabolomic analysis or cell biology, is a plus. Technical readiness to operate a cell sorter is a plus. The candidate must speak and write English fluently. Social skills are emphasized, as the student will conduct her/his project in an international research environment combining researchers from multiple research laboratories.
