The Department of Statistics offers two graduate degree programs: Master of Science, including a Data Science track, and Doctor of Philosophy in Statistics.

Applicants applying from outside Stanford must visit Graduate Admissions before beginning the application process for complete application information and instructions.

External Admissions (2022-2023)
PhD: Application opens in October. Deadline: December 1, 2021 (Wednesday) 11:59 PM PST. Decisions Posted: February 8th, 2022 by email.
MS : Application opens in October. Deadline: December 1, 2021 (Wednesday) 11:59 PM PST. Decisions Posted: February 28, 2022 by email.
Data Science: Application opens in October. Deadline: December 1, 2021 (Wednesday) 11:59 PM PST.  Decisions Posted: February 28, 2022 by email.

The Graduate Admissions accepts applications to the Statistics graduate programs in autumn each year for matriculation beginning the following academic year. Students may only matriculate in autumn quarter. Applications will not be accepted after the published deadlines above. Applicants to the Statistics graduate program may apply either to the MS program or to the PhD program, but may not apply to both.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that they meet all eligibility requirements before applying. All application materials, including supporting documents, must be received by the application deadline.

Knight-Hennessy Fellowship

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program cultivates and supports a highly-engaged, multidisciplinary and multicultural community of graduate students from across Stanford University, and delivers a diverse collection of educational experiences, preparing graduates to address complex challenges facing the world. Knight-Hennessy Scholars participate in an experiential leadership development program known as the King Global Leadership Program and receive funding for up to three years of graduate study at Stanford. Two applications must be submitted separately; one to Knight-Hennessy by October 6, 2021, 1 pm PST, and one to the Stanford graduate degree program by its deadline. To be considered, you must apply to Knight-Hennessy Scholars by October 6, 2021, at 1:00pm Pacific Time, and separately apply to the Statistics department by the department/program deadline.

Please note: Determination and notification of Knight-Hennessy awards is separate from department admission.

Application Review

File review begins promptly after the application deadline. Internal applications will be evaluated at the same time as the external applications: there is no separate review process for internal applicants. Please be aware that the Graduate Admissions Committee does not review incomplete applications.   

We urge applicants to take all required tests well before the application deadline.
