The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) Program provides training for students who intend to pursue careers in teaching and research. It can be an end in itself or serve as preparation for a PhD degree. Students may specialize in linguistics, literature, history and anthropology, or philosophy and religion, though they are expected to go beyond conventional disciplinary boundaries and cultivate knowledge and expertise in interdisciplinary dialogue and interaction. A candidate for an MPhil degree is expected to demonstrate knowledge in the discipline and to synthesize and create new knowledge, making a contribution to the field.
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Program is interdisciplinary in nature. It provides training for students who intend to pursue professional and academic careers. Students may specialize in linguistics, literature, history and anthropology, or philosophy and religion, but are expected to go beyond conventional disciplinary boundaries and cultivate knowledge and expertise in interdisciplinary dialogue and interaction. A candidate for a PhD degree is expected to demonstrate mastery of knowledge in the chosen discipline and to synthesize and create new knowledge, making an original and substantial contribution to the discipline.
On successful completion of the PhD program, graduates will be able to:
- Become a scholar in one of the humanistic disciplines in the Division, either Anthropology, History, Linguistics, Literature, Philosophy or Religion, apart from cultivating knowledge and expertise in interdisciplinary dialogue and interaction;
- Adopt a comparative and intercultural perspective to investigate into his/her specialized area, whether focusing on China or other parts of the world;
- Identify important issues and topics, command all the relevant primary sources and evaluate their values;
- Become well versed in representative scholarly works in his/her field and examine critically major narratives, interpretations, themes and/or paradigms ever produced;
- Apply textual and/or contextual analysis to the study of his/her specialized subject and design appropriate methodologies, techniques, tools and/or models for his/her research; and
- Through presentations, discussions and writing papers and the thesis, deliver his/her research findings in a professional and proficient manner.
The programs are offered by the Division of Humanities, with the following research foci.
Research Foci
Research foci include: Chinese economic and social history, comparative history of environment and technology, European intellectual and cultural history, and history of Sino-foreign relations, Chinese linguistics and history of Chinese language and dialects, Chinese philosophy (Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism), political and moral philosophy, comparative philosophy of East and West, Chinese and comparative literature, animation and film studies, and cultural studies, and cultural anthropology of South China.
To qualify for admission, applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Admission is selective and meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.1. General Admission Requirements of the University
- Applicants seeking admission to a master’s degree program should have obtained a bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution, or an approved equivalent qualification;
- Applicants seeking admission to a doctoral degree program should have obtained a bachelor’s degree with a proven record of outstanding performance from a recognized institution; or presented evidence of satisfactory work at the postgraduate level on a full-time basis for at least one year, or on a part-time basis for at least two years.
2. English Language Admission Requirements
Applicants have to fulfill English Language requirements with one of the following proficiency attainments:
- TOEFL-iBT: 80*
- TOEFL-pBT: 550
- TOEFL-Revised paper-delivered test: 60 (total scores for Reading, Listening and Writing sections)
- IELTS (Academic Module): Overall score: 6.5 and All sub-score: 5.5
* refers to the total score in one single attempt
Applicants are not required to present TOEFL or IELTS score if
- their first language is English, or
- they obtained the bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from an institution where the medium of instruction was English.
