About ADM’s Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Art, Design and Media

​The School of Art, Design and Media’s doctoral programme provides creative research opportunities in a wide spectrum of academic areas. Students are expected and encouraged to develop innovative ways of thinking, and to experiment and create in a range of media. This programme also acts as an incubator for the development and realization of original artistic and professional productions, including design, interactive media, film, animation and new art forms.

Through exploration of new ideas, creative practices and theories, the expectation is that students will transform the field. A collaboration of internationally recognized faculty members, visiting artists and scholars, offers a unique educational environment that is world-renowned. Creative and production cooperation between faculty and students is encouraged and the development of worldwide co-production opportunities is fostered.

ADM Research Areas

Digital Humanities and Art This area explores the meanings of artwork and practice in the era of digital technologies and emerging technologies such as virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI), digital streaming, wearable technologies, interactive/participatory interface, and data science.
Culture and Identity We interrogate the cultural politics of identity and representation on design art, film, television, photographic art, social media, packaging art, fashion, animation, and any forms of presentational art. This cluster focuses on locating the question of power in the contexts of race, class, and gender. 
Culture and Heritage The Culture and Heritage cluster examines key issues and art practices in exploring the meaning and the role of cultural heritage in contemporary society, especially in Singapore. 
Art History and Criticism Why does art matter? This area tackles works of art in historical contexts. Through interdisciplinary theories and critical lenses, we foreground the significance of historical and cultural contexts in the study of art.
Southeast Asian Art, Design and MediaWhile situating our scholarly inquiries in a Southeast Asian regional context, we explore the socio-cultural implications of various art forms including photographic art, media art, cinematic art, design art, interactive and participatory art, VR, data art, and many others.
Production Culture The production dimension of popular culture does research on production artists, production studios, production conventions, production styles, production conditions, production aesthetics, audience in the production process, art critics, art journalists, government agencies in art, etc. 
Art in Motion The Art in Motion cluster examines the theoretical and practical aspects of art in motion that becomes central in digital arts including film, character animation, real-time 3D storytelling, motion capture, motion graphics, stop motion, experimental filmmaking, visualizing data, installation arts, VR film, fictional & non-fictional animation, and sound art. 
Sight and Sound This cluster examines challenges and problems in applied aesthetics of visual image, sound image, cinematic expression, animation, design, interactive media, media interface, game, photography, and new media. It foregrounds the contextual power of aesthetic elements in narrative storytelling.​ ​ Design StudiesThis area explores the contributions of design led research methods in the contextual setting of everyday life of humans in the era of interconnected world through digital technologies in the near future as well as speculative approaches to conceptualising visual communication, products and object, space and the third dimension and interaction between humans as well as the emerging artificial intelligence.

Length of Candidature

The PhD can be pursued on a full-time or part-time basis. The minimum and maximum length of candidature are as shown:

Maximum Course Duration refers to the maximum candidature period of study, beyond which, students pay fees at unsubsidised rates.

Part-time Students to be admitted from AY2020 will pay fees at unsubsidised rates if they exceed the candidature period of 5 years for PhD as shown above.

Academic Calendar and Intake

Nanyang Technological University’s academic year commences in August and ends in July the following year. ADM currently has one intake in August per academic year.

Programme Structure

Option of Study​

PhD students may opt for either option of study:

• By research: submission of thesis of 85, 000 words; or​​
• By research with a practical component: submission of thesis of 65, 000 words and the practical component

The theoretical component of the dissertation should offer a substantial critical and / or technical contribution to the field of inquiry. However, in the event that the intellectual investigation undertaken by the student cannot be expressed fully in words, the practical component will be vital to complement and develop the theoretical research undertaken. The practical component should not just be illustrative of the theoretical thesis, but also make an original contribution in its own right.

Required Coursework (for PhD students admitted from August 2019 onwards)

PhD students who are admitted into the programme from August 2019 onwards are required to pass 6 graduate courses (or earn 18 Academic Units) with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 within 18 months of the candidature. These comprise 1 core graduate course, and 5 elective courses. At least 2 electives must be taken within ADM, and the other 3 electives from ADM or other Schools within NTU. All electives should be relevant to the student’s thesis and approved by their respective supervisors.

The compulsory core graduate course is:

AP9049 Academic Research Methods for Art, Design and Media

With this course, the Graduate Programmes by Research ensure that all our candidates embark on their graduate studies with the requisite level of advanced knowledge and research competence to undertake research at graduate level.

Other Mandatory Courses (for PhD students admitted from August 2019 onwards)

To complete and pass the following:

• HWG703 Graduate English (unless exempted) and​​
• HWG702 Teaching Assistants Programme (only for full-time PhD students)
• Communication/Writing Training

Compulsory component 1

ADM PhD students have to take at least 2 of the following 3 courses:

1. A901 Speaking Academia (WKWSCI)
2. HWG705 The Craft of Academic Writing by Language & Communications Centre (LCC)
3. HWG706 Academic Publishing by Language & Communications Centre (LCC)

Each course is 19.5hours (half a semester) in duration. Each course is planned to be offered in both Semester 1 and Semester 2. All PhD students need to read at least 2 out of the 3 courses to fulfill 39 training hours.

Compulsory component 2

All PhD students must attend the 3MT Symposium organised by Graduate College.

Optional component

A PhD student may opt to undertake one-on-one tutoring/mentoring at the Language Communication Centre (LCC).

Important Note:

No academic units are awarded for all courses listed in the Other Mandatory Courses section.
These courses are graded on a pass/fail basis and will appear in the student transcript.

Qualifying Exam

After fulfilling their coursework requirements, PhD students are required to take a Qualifying Exam during the 18th month of their candidature (for full-time students) or by the 24th month of their candidature (for part-time students). The key objectives of the Qualifying Exam are to ascertain that the thesis is a distinct addition to the knowledge in the chosen field and that the PhD student possesses the level of competency required to proceed to the next stage of the candidature. PhD students who pass the Qualifying Exam will continue with their candidature.

Thesis Examination and Oral Examination

To graduate, PhD students are required to submit their thesis for assessment by examiners from NTU and other universities by the end of their candidature.

After they are assessed to have passed their PhD thesis examination, all PhD students need to successfully defend their thesis during the Oral Examination before a panel of examiners.

Required Coursework (for PhD students admitted prior to August 2019)

PhD students who are admitted into the programme before August 2019 are required to pass 3 graduate courses (or earn 9 Academic Units) with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 within 18 months of the candidature. This comprises 2 core graduate courses and 4 electives. At least one elective must be taken at ADM, and the other electives can be taken from ADM or other Schools within NTU. They should be relevant to the student’s thesis and approved by their respective supervisors.

The two core graduate courses are:

• Graduate Seminar 1: Academic Research Skills (AP9031)
  This course is designed to introduce new students to the basic themes and methodologies associated with research at graduate level.
• Graduate Seminar 2: The Aesthetic (AP9019)​
  The topic of the aesthetic is of prime value to students within the graduate program of ADM. In the first part of the course, a series of seminars introduces the history and practice of various traditions in the aesthetic. The second part is devoted to students’ presentations, in which they are asked to develop their own aesthetic or investigate the aesthetic of a particular artist or art movement.​​​

Admission Criteria and Application

Admission Criteria

• A Master’s degree from a recognized institution which is relevant to the proposed disciplines or areas of research; and

• A Bachelor’s degree with minimum 2nd class honours upper or Honours (Distinction) or equivalent; in a field relevant to the proposed research topic from a recognized university;​

• For applicants whose mother tongue is not English, a good IELTS score of at least 7.0 is required. Candidates with an undergraduate or Masters degree from an institution where the language of instruction is English are exempted from taking the IELTS;
• It is important to note that besides meeting the basic academic requirements, applicants will also be assessed on the strength of their portfolios which have to meet the highest professional and academic standards.

Applicants are selected for interviews on the basis of their academic record, portfolio, and research proposal. Your research proposal must show that you are ready to write a PhD thesis that can be supervised at the School of Art, Design and Media, NTU.

  An original and creative piece of work related to the proposed research area. It could be a drawing, computer animations, short films, etc.

  Before you provide the name and email address of your referees, please ensure that they have already agreed to fill out the online referee report form for your NTU application.
• Personal statement
  A short essay on your aspirations and why you have identified ADM as the place to pursue your PhD.
• IELTS (if applicable)
• Personal Particulars page of passport / Identification card
• One recent passport-sized colour photograph​

Application Fee

Please note that with effect from 1 June 2018, when the Research application portal opens, all applicants will need to pay an application fee of $53.50 per programme.
