Our research-based degree programmes incorporate a coursework component as part of the academic requirements. Table below shows a summary of the requirements for the various programmes:
Programme | Minimum MCs | ISEM specific requirements: | Minimum CAP | S/U Option |
MEng | 16MCs | Nil. | 3.0 | 4MCs |
PhD | 24MCs | 1. At least 12MCs must be level 6000 | 3.5 | 8MCs |
EngD | 32MCs | 1. At least 12MCs must be level 60002. At least 16MCs must be Management of Technology / Business / Industrial Engineering | 3.5 | 8MCs |
MEng students are required to read at least 16 MCs graduate-level modules while PhD students are required to take at least 24 MCs graduate-level modules, of which at least 12 MCs must be Level 6000. EngD students are required to take at least 32 MCs graduate-level modules, of which at least 12 MCs must be Level 6000 and at least 16MCs must be Management of Technology / Business / Industrial Engineering. There are no restrictions on the choices i.e. selection can be from Engineering, Computing, Business etc., as long as the supervisor approves and is related to the student’s research. MEng students who plan to upgrade to PhD should also consider taking the Level 6000 modules. International students who present basic degrees from universities where the medium of instruction is not English would need to fulfil additional English language requirements.
A minimum average grade of B- (CAP 3.0) needs to be obtained by MEng students, while doctoral students need to achieve at least a B (CAP 3.5) average. Effective Semester 2 of AY2016/2017, Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) option is available to graduate engineering research students. The S/U option is intended to encourage students to pursue their intellectual interests, without undue concern that exploring a new subject area may adversely affect their CAP. The S/U declaration exercise will be conducted upon the release of examination results and will end by the stipulated deadline, which will be announced each semester. Students will exercise their S/U option during this period for any module that permits the S/U option. Thereafter, the student’s decision will be considered final. A MEng student may opt up to 4MCs of S/U on their modules, while a PhD student may opt up to 8MCs of S/U on their modules. For more information on S/U policy, please visit here.
Module Registration
Students are required to discuss their module selection with supervisors prior to module registration. Students may do a search on https://nusmods.com/ for modules that is of interest and their timetables. Alternatively, students may also refer to the list of frequently applied modules here.
English Modules (taught by the Centre of English Language Communication)
Students must obtain a Grade C and above in the Graduate English Courses if they do not qualify for waiver of English Language requirement. The results for the Diagnostic English Test (DET) will determine the entry level of English course to be admitted (Basic or intermediate).
All PhD and EngD students must take ES5101 and achieve a minimum C grade.
Code | Title & Short Description | Semester Offered* |
ES5000 | Graduate English Course (Basic Level) | 1,2 |
ES5001A | Graduate English Course (Intermediate Level) | 1,2 |

Timetables
Level 5000 ISE and ETM modules are usually taught on weekday evenings from 6-9 pm over 13 weeks. Level 6000 ISE modules are usually taught on weekday mornings/afternoons, similar to most Level 6000 modules from other faculties. Exams may be held during working hours on weekdays. Students may use NUSMODS to search for timetable offered by other faculties/departments.
