About the position
Position as PhD Research Fellow in wireless communications & applications available at Department of Technology Systems.
No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo. Starting date as soon as possible.
The fellowship period is 3 (three) years and devoted to carrying out a project “5G technology for maritime applications”. The fellowship will be based at the Department of Technology Systems at Kjeller, working in close collaboration with Kongsberg Maritime and SINTEF.
Currently, we are at the starting phase of changing the maritime business by developing the core building blocks for autonomous and electric vessels. New technology innovations are necessary in optimizing maritime operations for a sustainable and future oriented business. To obtain the full potential, advanced and reliable connectivity solutions are necessary, both between ships/shore and on-board the ships. In this respect, the 5G technology shows an interesting potential in providing an integrated communications solution covering several application areas, and both critical and less critical communications.
The PhD candidate is expected to explore the potential of the 5G technology, evaluate its performance and applicability in various maritime domains, and propose improvements and modifications to the current standard based on identified shortcomings for maritime environments and applications. The candidate will get the opportunity to do theoretical evaluations, experimental work and piloting.
The project “Maritime 5G” is led by Kongsberg Maritime with support and participation from SINTEF Digital, SINTEF Ocean, and the University of Oslo. The project is funded by Kongsberg Maritime and the Research Council of Norway. After successful graduation there are good opportunities for continuing the career in Kongsberg Maritime.

- Master’s degree or equivalent in communications technology, electronics, physics/math, computer science or similar fields.
- Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system
- Solid theoretical knowledge and ability to quickly learn new topics
- Good programming skills will be valued
- Interest- and proven skills in practical lab work, is an advantage
- Relevant experience within R&D, and/or radio systems, programming, etc. is an advantage, but not a prerequisite
The norm is as follows:
- The average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor’s degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system
- The average grade point for courses included in the Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
- The Master’s thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English and a Scandinavian language.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.
