DOCTORAL RESEARCHER, Sport and Health Sciences starting January 3rd, 2022, or as agreed, until September 30th 2023 with the possibility to continue up to four years.

Tasks and qualifications

The doctoral researcher will participate to a project that examines the dose-response relationship of physical activity and health using individual physical activity profiling in older adults. This exciting externally funded project (Academy of Finland, Yrjö Jahnsson Foundation) uses wearable technology (accelerometry and ECG) and novel analysis methodology based on artificial intelligence.

The doctoral researcher will take part in laboratory work as a member of a team, physiological signal analysis, statistical analyses and preparation of 3-4 peer-reviewed journal articles. The doctoral studies also include courses designed to complement the research training process. The doctoral researcher may also assist in other tasks, e.g. student supervision, teaching and applying for additional funding.

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of Doctoral Researchers are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines.

A prerequisite for this position is a completed or soon completed Master’s degree in a relevant field, e.g. Sport and health sciences, Epidemiology, Health technology or Statistics. The chosen candidate will prepare a research plan and apply to the doctoral school of the Faculty.

The successful candidate is required to have experience of laboratory measurements of health and performance in older adults or at least a strong desire to learn, basic knowledge of quantitative statistical techniques, good oral and written English communication skills, interest in mathematics and numerical analysis methods and an ability to work independently as well as in a research team. Programming skills (e.g. Matlab, python, R or similar) or a strong desire to learn, as well as demonstrated scientific writing skills, will be considered as an advantage.

The salary of the successful candidate will be based on level 2-4 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research staff in the salary system of Finnish universities. The annual salary will be approximately 28,500 EUR (gross income, including a holiday bonus). As the thesis work progresses, the salary will be revised in accordance with the Collective Agreement of Finnish Universities. A trial period of six months will be used in the beginning of the employment.
