The Laboratory for Soft Matter and Biophysics (ZMB) studies soft matter in a broad perspective and has a more specific focus on biomolecules, cells, bacteria and biofunctional materials. Part of this is the development of synthetic bio-receptors such as MIPs (molecularly imprinted polymers) and innovative biosensing instrumentation for applications in medical diagnostics, environmental science, and food safety. The ZMB lab was founded in 2015 and is equipped with all relevant facilities in the context of bio- and biomimetic sensors. ZMB collaborates closely with academic partners in Belgium and abroad, with hospitals, and with industry.Website unit

Project

  • This research takes place within the recently granted Eranet project ARENA: Antibiotic REsistaNce and Pathogenic Signature in Marine and Freshwater Aquaculture Systems.
  • The increasing resistance of bacteria against various antimicrobials is a top priority that is high on the European agenda.
  • We will develop two types of sensors that can detect bacteria selectively and quantitatively: A compact, mobile sensor for analyses anywhere in the water circuit and a stationary sensor for the monitoring of bacteria in aquaculture installations.
  • The detection principle will combine impedance spectroscopy with surface-imprinted polymers (SIPs). SIPs recognize and bind bacteria on basis of their size, shape and membrane composition.
  • ZMB will develop a novel soft-lithographic technique with the aim of synthesizing SIPs with an especially high areal density of binding sites, all with uniform binding properties for the target bacteria.
  • The sensors will first be optimized in a laboratory environment and then validated in a real-life context, for instance at the Belgian cost in cooperation with the ILVO institute and at the aquaculture facilities of the Université de Lìege.
  • It is certainly ambitious but an explicit goal: To enhance the selectivity of the sensors to a level that they can distinguish between resistant and pathogenic strains of a bacterial species and non-pathogenic strains.

  • This vacancy is open for candidates holding a Master degree in natural sciences, engineering sciences, or life sciences.
  • Candidates who will obtain their Master diploma before August 2021 can apply as well.
  • Suitable candidates have a strong background in experimental laboratory work, a solid basis in electronics and programming languages, and a keen interest in microbiology and environmental sciences.
  • Good organizing- and communication skills are a benefit, given the fact that the project will be performed in close cooperation with national and international partners. 

Offer

  • The project has a duration of 36 months and offers the possibility of obtaining a Ph.D., provided that subsequent funding is acquired.
  • The project is interdisciplinary with facets of the physics and chemistry of surfaces, the engineering of sensors, and the microbiology of bacteria from an environmental perspective.
  • On longer term, the project will contribute to an improved management and control of resistant microbes and their associated risks for public health.
  • To remediate possibly-lacking skills for the project, you can choose from various courses offered by the Arenberg Doctoral School.
  • You participate actively in measuring campaigns in Belgium and abroad. Already during the design phase of the sensors, you will work closely together with Université de Liège and with Aachen University of Applied Sciences.
  • You will take part in international conferences and you will publish in esteemed scientific journals.
