The Research Unit in Roman Law and Legal History is a small but vibrant and internationally oriented center for teaching and research in various field of Roman law and general legal history. Its research focuses on the period since 1500. Members of the center teach the mandatory subjects History of Public Law, Roman Law as well as History of Private Law at the Leuven, Brussels and Kortrijk campuses in the LLB program. At the master level, they teach courses in general and European legal history as well as history of international law. The latter subject forms one of the three particular fields of interest of the center, next to the intellectual history of the civil law tradition (Roman as well as canon law) and the history of economic and financial law.Website unit
An assistant is both a teaching assistant (1/3rd of the work time) and PhD research fellow (2/3rds of the work time). The main assignment of the new assistant will be to develop and execute her/his own research project towards obtaining a PhD at KU Leuven, under the supervision of one or two of the center’s professors. Ideally, the project falls within the interest focuses of the center.
- The successful candidate has graduated in law and/or history and is holder of a master degree.
- She/he has an excellent study trajectory and masters Dutch, English as well as French with proficiency. Other languages, and in particular Latin, are a plus.
- She/he has strong interests in academic research as well as in history and society at large, is well-read and has good communicative skills, in reading and writing.
- She/he is social, collaborative and is able to work autonomously.
This vacancy concerns an appointment as a full-time assistant for an initial period of 2 years. With positive evaluations and good progress of the doctoral research, the appointment can be extended twice to a maximum of 6 years.This function is linked to a salary scale 43.
