PhD Research Fellow in Reservoir Physics

There is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow in reservoir physics at the Department of Physics and Technology. The duration of the PhD Research Fellow is 4 years, of which 25 per cent of the time each year comprises required duties associated with research, teaching and dissemination of results. The position is financed by the University of Bergen.

About the project/work tasks:

The project is called “Non-uniqueness of multiphase flow in porous media” and targets physical variability in repeated carbon dioxide (CO2) injection experiments using the same geological geometry. In collaboration with Universität Stuttgart, stochastic invasion percolation models will be matched with non-unique, multiphase flow patterns observed in real-time. The proposed project has a unique possibility to explore the predictable capabilities of models in the interface between data-driven modelling, incomplete physical characterizations, and stochastic processes.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • Applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent education in flow in porous media, or must have submitted his/her master’s thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the master’s degree has been awarded.
  • Experience from experimental methods related to displacement processes in porous media is a requirement.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.
  • Applicants must have a good command of the Norwegian language.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

Special requirements for the position

  • Applicants must have experience from experimental research on CO2 injection in porous media
  • Applicants must have experience from visualization in porous media, including image processing and analysis of dynamic displacement processes.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently in the laboratory, and document experience from building their own experimental setups.
  • Applicants should have experience from Matlab or similar tools.
  • It is an advantage that applicants have knowledge of statistics and the ability for mathematical analysis.
