The Department of Molecular and Clinical Medicine, at the Institute of Medicine, conducts translational research primarily on metabolism, diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease in order to improve health and healthcare in the community. The overall goal is to create an excellent translational research environment of a very high international standard.
The position will be hosted in Muhammad Arif’s research group at the Wallenberg Laboratory. The group is part of the national Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS) program, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. Their research focuses on developing computational methods and integrating multi-omics data to study progressive diseases, particularly cardiometabolic-associated diseases. Systems Biology of Cardiometabolic Diseases
Specific Subject Description
Cardiometabolic diseases (CMD) are progressive and multifactorial and require stage-specific biomarkers for early detection. This project aims to develop data-driven approaches to identify progressive CMD biomarkers and candidate therapeutic targets.
Job Assignments
The postdoctoral fellow will primarily focus on conducting high-quality research. You will lead a project analyzing multi-omics data from blood and affected tissues of clinical patients while contributing to ongoing research in the field.
Responsibilities include data quality control and analysis, dissemination of findings through research articles and conference presentations, and mentoring students in the group. There is flexibility to refine and expand the project’s scope within the defined framework based on your expertise and research interests. Additionally, you are expected to collaborate on projects with other group members, contribute to administrative tasks such as data acquisition and ethical applications, and support the overall functioning of the research team.
This position is part of the national DDLS program, providing you with the opportunity to join a network of next-generation data-driven life scientists. The program aims to build strong, globally competitive computational and data science capabilities within Swedish life science.
Eligibility
To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree in a relevant subject, or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made.
In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.
Assesment Criteria
Requirements:
- PhD in bioinformatics, biostatistics, computational biology, data science, machine learning, molecular biology, or a related field is required.
- Ability to generate ideas and perform independent research is essential.
- A strong computational background and ability to work with UNIX and code independently in Python or R are required (Python is preferred).
- Experience with analysis and visualization of large data is expected.
- Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
Merits:
- Proven ability to write scientific text coherently. This can be demonstrated by published scientific articles where the applicant is the first author and write a major part of the text (including ready-to-submit manuscript in preprint servers)
- Experience in working with noisy data and managing multiple confounding factors
- Experience in applying machine learning and/or network analysis in complex datasets
- Experience of using version control (e.g. Git) and reproducible science.
- Experience in working with High-performance computing infrastructure.
- Experience with omics data analysis (e.g. transcriptomics, metabolomics) beyond statistical inference.
- Experience with cardiometabolic diseases research
These qualifications will be used for ranking candidates, by assessment of competence and proficiency, applicants which are deemed to have the best conditions for implementing the current tasks and contributing to a positive development of the research group will be selected.
