Postdoctor in Osteoporosis

项目介绍

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition, at the Institute of Medicine, conducts research in several different areas, such as osteoporosis, endocrinology, hematology, gastroenterology, hypertension, respiratory medicine and allergology, and clinical nutrition focusing on body composition and energy metabolism. The research is conducted in close collaboration with health care at both the Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Mölndal Hospital.

The advertised postdoc position will be placed within the Sahlgrenska Osteoporosis Centre (SOC). Interdisciplinary translational research is conducted here with the aim of improving diagnostics, prevention and treatment options for diseases related to the skeleton such as osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis and bone metastases in cancer. Medical doctors, researchers, postdocs, postdoctoral students and biomedical analysts work at SOC and we are now looking for a postdoc for a project on osteoporosis. The research group studies the relationship between the gut microbiota and the skeleton with the aim of identifying new methods to prevent and treat osteoporosis.

The candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Claes Ohlsson who is a leading researcher in translational osteoporosis research. (https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=RcHgovUAAAAJ&hl=svhttps://www.gu.se/en/about/find-staff/claesohlsson)

Subject area

Osteoporosis

Subject area description

Osteoporosis is a common skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass leading to an increased risk of fractures. Although the consequences of osteoporosis are well known, the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. The overall objective of the announced postdoctoral position is to investigate the role of the gut microbiota composition for bone and muscle health of importance for fracture risk. The aim of the research is to identify more efficient and safe treatment of patients with osteoporosis.

Duties

The candidate will work with translational osteoporosis research within the Sahlgrenska Osteoporosis Centre at the University of Gothenburg. More specifically, the candidate will be responsible for evaluating bacteria with the potential to improve bone and muscle health in mouse models of osteoporosis. The bacteria have been identified in large population-based cohorts and will be given in combination with and without substrates. The candidate will also be responsible for bioinformatics based on experimental animal studies. The candidate will handle metagenome sequence data including both taxonomy and functionality. The candidate will also compile the results for publication in international scientific journals.

Eligibility

To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree in a relevant subject, or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made.

Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.

Assessment criteria

We are looking for a person with extensive experience in experimental animal studies. Experience in skeletal analyses in mice, knowledge about gut microbiota as well as bioinformatics and analyses of metagenome sequence data is a merit. We operate in an international environment and the applicant is expected to have good skills in communicating orally and in writing in English. Great emphasis is placed on personal qualities, not least the ability to work independently and in an organized manner.
