The Institute of Medicine, Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, conducts extensive teaching and research in areas including health economics, biostatistics, global public health, register-based epidemiology, pharmaceutical use, and general and social medicine.
The position is situated at the intersection of three research platforms at the University of Gothenburg: Health Economics, Policy and Evaluation (HEPER), the Centre for Health Governance, and UGOT-ReWork.
HEPER focuses on health economics and epidemiological methods, analyzing healthcare systems and health policy. The Centre for Health Governance is an interdisciplinary center dedicated to the governance and organization of healthcare. UGOT-ReWork develops and evaluates interventions to promote sustainable return to work following sick leave.
The position involves close collaboration within and across these research environments, as well as with other universities
Subject area
Health economics, biostatistics, epidemiology
Subject description
The position is funded through two externally financed projects that use Swedish register data to study the organization of primary care and its effects on efficiency, equity, work ability, and return to work. The projects also examine the role of the physician and the patient–physician relationship in pharmaceutical treatment and sick leave.
The employment is affiliated with the FORTE-funded centre UGOT-ReWork and a work package that analyzes modifiable individual-, organizational-, and system-level factors underlying return to work, with a focus on primary care and social insurance. Through quantitative analyses of cohorts and register data, the research explores how the organization of healthcare, professional incentives, and regulatory frameworks influence sick leave processes and sustainable return to work.
The position offers strong opportunities for register-based research using Swedish population and health data in a dynamic interdisciplinary environment, in collaboration with researchers in health economics, biostatistics, epidemiology, general practice, and occupational and environmental medicine.
Duties
The primary responsibility is to conduct high-quality quantitative research on the organization and markets of healthcare and their implications for work ability. The work is carried out independently and in interdisciplinary collaboration using Swedish register data, in close affiliation with HEPER, the Centre for Health Governance, and ReWork.
The duties include register-based analyses of primary care organization, physician–patient relationships, and physicians’ labor markets, as well as studies of factors and policies influencing return to work. There is scope to further develop both the research focus and the candidate’s individual scientific profile.
The postdoctoral researcher is expected to contribute to an active research environment, participate in external grant applications together with senior researchers, and engage in seminars and joint activities.

The position requires a PhD in health economics, economics, epidemiology, biostatistics, or another closely related field. The applicant must also have an excellent command of English, both written and spoken. In addition, the applicant must have demonstrated the ability to independently write coherent scientific text, evidenced by at least one high-quality scientific paper in which the applicant is the main author and has had substantial responsibility for shaping the manuscript.
Meritorious qualifications for the position include:
- Strong experience working on health economic research questions, preferably involving health economic evaluation methods
- Strong experience conducting quantitative analyses (econometrics, biostatistics, modelling)
- An interest in pursuing independent research within the research questions included in MedPREP
- Strong experience conducting statistical and health economic analyses in R and/or Stata
We also place great emphasis on personal suitability. You are structured, take responsibility, and have a strong ability to deliver tasks to completion in close collaboration with the research group. We also value a strong willingness to contribute actively to the research environment.
