Do you want to contribute to shaping the future of public transport through mathematics? Join an interdisciplinary research project PRONTO at the intersection of applied mathematics, automatic control, and data science, at the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
About us
The Department of Mathematical Science provides a creative, dynamic and innovative environment where research, education, and societal collaboration meet. The research topics in the department span fundamental and applied research to contribute to the development of a sustainable society. We are Sweden’s largest mathematical department, with around 200 dedicated staff, including 65 Doctoral students. We are a joint department between Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, combining the best of two academic worlds in the heart of Gothenburg.
At the Division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, we conduct research in computational mathematics, optimisation, biomathematics, statistics, and data science with strong connections to engineering, natural sciences, and industry.
About the research project
The PRONTO project aims at modeling public transport networks with stochastic partial differential equations. The project is joint between research groups in mathematics and automatic control and the approach is interdisciplinary, combining applied mathematics, transport and system engineering, and data science. It offers a novel perspective on understanding and managing uncertainty in large-scale infrastructure systems. For more details, see https://research.chalmers.se/en/project/12873
Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:
- A doctoral degree in applied mathematics, computer science, or another relevant field, or an equivalent foreign degree. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
- At least three of:
- (stochastic) partial differential equations ((S)PDEs)
- graph theory/network science
- stochastic optimization and control
- applied mathematics
- AI/data science/statistics/geostatistics.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
The following experience will strengthen your application:
- Experience in transportation applications
What you will do
The primary responsibility of a postdoc is to conduct research within the scope of the project. You are expected to work both independently and in a group, develop your own scientific concepts, write scientific manuscripts, and to share your research results with collaborators and at international conferences. The position may, on a voluntary basis, include teaching activities (up to 20%), for example supervision of Bachelor’s and Master’s students.
Contract terms
The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years starting from the beginning of January 2027.
The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date, otherwise the offer may be withdrawn.
What we offer
- As a postdoc at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits. Read more about working at Chalmers and our benefits for employees.
- A dynamic and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg.
- Read more about Sweden’s generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, healthcare etc at Move To Gothenburg.
Chalmers is dedicated to improving gender balance and actively works with equality projects, such as the GENIE Initiative for gender equality and excellence. We celebrate diversity and consider equality and inclusion as fundamental aspects of all our activities.
If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses to help you settle in.
