About us
At the Division of Physical Resource Theory, we study how societies can transition towards sustainability. Building on physics and systems analysis, our interdisciplinary research connects technical and social sciences to address challenges such as climate change, energy transitions and sustainable land use.
About the research project
The research will develop and apply quantitative models to analyse how new environmental constraints affect hydropower operation, flexibility, and system value. At the same time, the project explores opportunities for capacity additions and how this can make hydropower support a power system with increasing shares of variable renewable energy.
By integrating environmental, technical, and economic perspectives, the project aims to provide insights into key trade-offs and guide decision-making for a sustainable and reliable Swedish energy system.
Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:
- A doctoral degree in energy systems or applied mathematics.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
- Experience in energy systems modelling, optimisation, or analysis of hydropower
Postdoctoral researchers are typically expected to contribute not only to research but also to teaching and academic collaboration as part of their role in European universities
The following experience will strengthen your application
- It is highly meritorious if the doctoral degree has been obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline
- Experience in hydropower modelling, water resource systems, or renewable energy integration
- Experience with Nordic hydropower system
- Experience working with policy-relevant research or stakeholder engagement in the energy sector
What you will do
- Develop and apply advanced models of the Nordic hydropower system
- Analyse trade-offs between ecological requirements, electricity production, and system flexibility in a renewable energy system
- Publish research in leading scientific journals and contribute to policy-relevant reports
- Collaborate with researchers, industry stakeholders, and public authorities
Postdoctoral researchers typically combine independent research with collaboration, dissemination, and project activities as part of their role in academia
- Supervise master’s and/or Doctoral students to a certain extent, contributing to their academic development and research projects
- Possibility to engage in teaching at undergraduate and/or master’s level
Contract terms
The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension.
