We are seeking a strong and independent postdoctoral researcher in Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education, with a particular focus on STEM. Join our team at the Division of Engineering Education Research (EER), Department of Communication and Learning in Science (CLS), and become part of a growing research group in a collaborative and dynamic environment.
About us
At the Department of Communication and Learning in Science we conduct research and training in language, communication, engineering education research and strategic publishing. We offer tools for scientific communication and support researchers, teachers, students, and managers in choosing teaching methods, publishing methods and information sources. Our library environment creates open meeting places for everyone.
At the Division for Engineering Education Research we conduct research and education with a focus on teaching and learning, particularly in higher technical education. We are responsible for Chalmers teachers’ continuous professional development in higher education teaching and learning.
About the research project
Artificial intelligence (AI), and particularly the rapid advancement of generative AI technologies, is transforming higher education and reshaping how knowledge is created, shared, and assessed. These developments offer opportunities for pedagogical innovation, but they also raise fundamental questions about the relation between technology, learning and human agency.
The proposed project should contribute to the growing field of Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education by examining the pedagogical, cognitive, social, or institutional implications of AI adoption in higher education. We particularly welcome projects that combine empirical rigor with a reflective or critical orientation. That is, projects that do not only explore what AI can do for learning, but also what its broader consequences are for learners, teachers, and institutions.
The proposed postdoctoral research may, for example, explore:
- How students and teachers in STEM disciplines use and make sense of AI-based tools for learning, problem-solving, and assessment.
- How AI technologies influence cognitive and metacognitive processes, such as reasoning, conceptual understanding, and self-regulation in learning.
- Institutional responses, governance models, and ethical frameworks shaping the integration of AI in higher education.
We especially encourage research that combines socio-technical perspectives with quantitative methods, such as learning analytics (from e.g. click-stream data, eye tracking, screen capture etc.), surveys, or other large-scale data analysis. However, we also welcome qualitative or mixed-method approaches that can provide rich, contextualized insights into how AI technologies influence learning, cognition, and teaching practices.
Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:
- A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree in Educational Sciences or a related field with a strong connection to educational technology. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made
- Very good knowledge of and experience in applying quantitative and/or qualitative research methods for educational research.
- A promising publication record in well-regarded journals and/or conferences relevan to AI in higher edcuation research.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
The following experience will strengthen your application:
- A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline
- Participation in international research networks within the research area.
- Experience working with students and/or teachers in close-to-practice educational research.
What you will do
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will be a highly active member of the CLS department and EER division, with a particular affiliation to the Digital Learning and Teaching research group. You will be expected to plan, conduct, and publish high-quality research in leading outlets, and to contribute to an ambitious and expanding research environment.
Together with colleagues, you will also be encouraged to contribute to applications for external research funding. Depending on your research experience and interests, you also have the opportunity to (co-)supervise doctoral and master’s students, and to take part in limited teaching activities.
Contract terms
