Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy

项目介绍

The Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy Section of DTU Physics invites highly talented candidates to apply for a PhD scholarship. The starting date is desired as early as possible.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The focus of this PhD project is the dynamics and diagnostics of non-thermal and thermal ions in magnetically confined plasmas. Specifically, we are seeking a candidate to improve our exploitation of the Collective Thomson Scattering (CTS) diagnostic for plasma ion measurements at the ASDEX upgrade tokamak in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching, Germany. This includes development of the diagnostic operating regime and of analysis methods for fast-ion measurements, as well as testing the prospects of characterizing thermal ions using so-called heating-beam measurements. A further element is to conduct a detailed study of the feasibility of exploiting CTS at the future DEMO fusion reactor, aided by the measurements at ASDEX Upgrade. As such, the project incorporates development of and participation in experiments, data analysis, and modelling of microwave propagation in fusion plasmas. Theoretical work such as development of CTS analysis codes can also form part of the project, depending on the candidate’s interests.

The successful candidate will have obtained excellent grades in his/her Bachelor and Masters degrees. He/she should also be well-motivated, hardworking and willing and able to work as part of a team. Candidates for the PhD position should have a Masters’ degree in Physics or Mathematics or have similar qualifications by the time they commence the project.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Assessment

The assessment of the applicants will be made by an assessment committee headed by Head of Section, Associate Professor Stefan Kragh Nielsen.
