Physical Geography: hydrology and groundwater-surface water interactions at catchment scale

项目介绍

The Department of Physical Geography is one of the major departments within the Faculty of Science. The department has approximately 115 employees and educates approximately 1 000 students annually. Education is oriented towards geography, geosciences, biology-earth sciences, and environmental protection and environmental management. The main research areas are: Landscape, Evironment and Geomatics, Climate Science and Quaternary Geology, Geomorphology and Glaciology, and Water, Permafrost and Environmental systems. The chosen candidate will find a stimulating and friendly environment in a very diverse and international department with high quality research and teaching.

Project description
The PhD work will be in hydrology, with a focus on the interactions between groundwater and surface water at catchment scale. The work includes quantitative analysis, data interpretation and modeling, which may also include machine learning methods, in order to quantify and understand the role of groundwater in water quantity and quality changes over whole hydrological catchments under varying climate and land-use conditions in different parts of the world.

The research is data-intensive, with compilation, synthesis and process-based modeling, in possible combination with machine learning methods, of regional and global datasets to reveal driving forces and effects and the role of groundwater-surface water interactions for changes in water flows, water availability and water quality in over hydrological catchments.

Qualification requirements
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

In order to meet the specific entry requirements, and to fulfil the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the field of physical geography, the candidate for this position should have acquired a total of 240 higher education credits (of which at least 60 at advanced level), or acquired in some alternative fashion, the equivalent knowledge in geoscience, environmental science or other relevant natural or engineering science.

The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.

Selection
The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the training. The following criteria will be used to assess this capacity: the candidate’s documented knowledge in hydrology with relevance to the focus area of this PhD position, written and oral proficiency in English, capacity for analytical thinking, ability to collaborate, as well as creativity, initiative, and independence. The assessment will be based on previous experience and grades, the quality of the degree project, references, relevant experience, interviews, and the candidate’s written motivation for seeking the position.

The assessment criteria also include the candidate’s ability to model (data- and process-based, and possibly also combined with machine learning methods) changes in water flows, water availability and water quality in hydrological catchments of different scales in different parts of the world. Preference is given to candidates with a strong background in quantitative hydrology and modeling that also includes the groundwater system, as well as experience of using geographic information systems and national and international databases. Experience in machine learning methods is also an advantage. Candidates should be highly motivated, committed and enthusiastic to work in the field of this PhD project. The doctoral dissertation will be written in English.

Admission Regulations for Doctoral Studies at Stockholm University are available at: www.su.se/rules and regulations.
