PhD within modeling of coastal erosion for extreme events

项目介绍

About the job

As part of the ERC Consolidator grant “Particle Resolving Fluid-Sediment Interaction” (PARTRES), we have a vacancy for a 3-year PhD position at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering within the Marine Civil Engineering group. Representing the interconnected processes of current, waves and sediment transport constitutes an interdisciplinary challenge. In the PARTRES project, the sediment transport will be described through a particle centric numerical framework.

This PhD position focuses on the modelling of coastal erosion under extreme hydrodynamics events. It will be simulated with a special consideration of the nonlinear wave effects in order to better estimate sediment transport during coastal storms, storm surges and flooding. The modeling centers around a three-dimensional non-hydrostatic model, which includes both the nonlinear coastal wave transformations under extreme hydrodynamic events and the resulting coastal erosion. The efficient and versatile non-hydrostatic model will be coupled to the particle-based coastal sediment and erosion modelling framework developed under PARTRES.

The numerical model used for those activities is the open-source hydrodynamics framework REEF3D (www.reef3d.com). The model is developed in-house and the candidate will be a member of the research team. The new sediment particle transport model will be implemented in REEF3D through a generic particle framework that is parallelized for domain decomposition.

The position reports to the head of department and the main supervisor is a professor.

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

Duties of the position

  • Work on coastal erosion modelling under extreme hydrodynamic event and nonlinear waves using a non-hydrostatic model
  • Contribute to the development of the open-source hydrodynamics software REEF3D
  • Publish in top-ranking journals and conferences
