PhD students in Federated Reinforcement Learning

项目介绍

We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting the challenges of the day. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!

We are looking for one or two PhD students in Federated Reinforcement learning at the Information Coding Division (ICG), which is based at the Department of Electrical Engineering (ISY). You will be part of the national research program WASP.

Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) is Sweden’s largest individual research program ever, a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education and faculty recruitment. The program addresses research on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems acting in collaboration with humans, adapting to their environment through sensors, information and knowledge, and forming intelligent systems-of-systems.

The vision of WASP is excellent research and competence in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and software for the benefit of Swedish society and industry. Read more: https://wasp-sweden.org/.

The graduate school within WASP is dedicated to provide the skills needed to analyze, develop, and contribute to the interdisciplinary area of artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and software. Through an ambitious program with research visits, partner universities, and visiting lecturers, the graduate school actively supports forming a strong multi-disciplinary and international professional network between PhD-students, researchers and industry. Read more: https://wasp-sweden.org/graduate-school/.

Your work assignments

In this WASP financed project, the research will focus on the study of federated reinforcement learning (FRL) algorithms for closed loop (CL) control of dynamical systems that adhere to safety constraints while enhancing the privacy of individual agent’s local data. Furthermore, the project will aim to enhance the resilience of these algorithms against challenges such as adversarial attacks, system heterogeneity, the random dropout of participating RL agents, and uneven distribution of data across agents.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have graduated at Master’s level in Electrical Engineering or a related subject area, or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in the previously named subject. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way. The requirement for a degree must be met no later than the time the employment decision is finalized, which occurs when the employment contract is signed.

Selection for postgraduate education takes place according to the assessed ability to assimilate the postgraduate education. When filling this position, special emphasis will be placed on the following competencies of the applicant:

– For the dissertation and the subject relevant knowledge and skills, for example demonstrated strong background knowledge at advanced level especially related to automatic control, statistical signal processing, reinforcement learning and federated learning, including good programming skills in Python and MATLAB.

– Ability to work independently and ability to formulate and address technical and scientific problems.

– You demonstrate high reliability and consistency in your work.

– You are highly organized and methodical in your approach to conducting research.

– You have a strong ability to generate original ideas and innovative approaches. Your creativity allows you to handle complex research challenges with new perspectives, contributing to the department by inspiring your colleagues.

– Good written and oral communication skills, including proficiency in English, both spoken and written. The ability to speak and write in Swedish may be an additional merit.

– Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary and multicultural team/environment.

Your workplace

You will work in the division of Information Coding that conducts research as well as undergraduate and postgraduate education in areas such as Information Processing Technologies, including Quantum Information and Computation, Optoeletronics, Physical Layer Security (PLS) and Information Theory, Cybersecurity and Digital Forensics. The employment

When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University.

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.

If you have any questions about being a PhD student at ISY, please reach out to: isyphdcouncil@groups.liu.se.

Starting date by agreement.

Background screening may come to be carried out before any decision on employment is made.

Salary and employment benefits
