项目介绍
We are offering two exciting PhD positions to explore the fascinating world of DNA and RNA at the single-molecule level using optical tweezers. By delving into their thermodynamics, kinetics, and dynamics, you will uncover how these biomolecules function and interact with small molecules, including potential drug candidates. The project is part of a European doctoral network consisting of in total 15 PhD students and includes common courses and secondments in other labs.
Information about the division and the department
The Chemical Biology division is the home of seven research groups. We combine and develop protein engineering, synthetic chemistry and state-of-the-art biophysical methos (spectroscopy, live-cell imaging and nanotechnology) to address cutting edge questions in biology to meet medical challenges related to human health. Our joint expertise spans from molecular biophysics of single molecules to cell and organism biology.
The Westerlund group uses single molecule techniques to single molecules with a strong focus on nucleic acids. The research ranges from basic science to clinical and diagnostic applications. Within this project we will collaborate with several European groups on using optical tweezers to study single DNA and RNA molecules.
Project description
The positions are part of a European doctoral network (MSCA-DN) consisting of in total 15 PhD students in 8 universities in 6 countries. The two students will work with optical tweezers to study nucleic acids and their interactions with small molecules, complemented by other biophysical techniques. The goal is to understand how to develop next generation therapeutics based on nucleic acids and their interactions. The international context of the project means that you will spend time in at least two other labs as part of the PhD studies.
Major responsibilities
- Single molecule experiments using optical tweezers,
- Collaborations with several European groups,
- Secondments in at least two complementary labs.
