The Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering consists of three divisions: Quality Science, Industrial Engineering and Management and Civil Engineering and Built Environment. The department has approximately 100 employees and has its research and education both at the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland. For more information, see the web of the department. This position will be located at the division of Civil Engineering and Built Environment in Uppsala.
The Division Civil Engineering and Built Environment conducts research and education in the field of construction with a focus on energy in buildings and the built environment. We provide courses in building physics, building design, energy efficiency in buildings, energy systems for buildings and infrastructure systems. Around 20 people work with us and we have several successful collaborations with businesses and organizations. For more information, see the webpage of the division.
Duties
This position is part of the research project “Smart and bidirectional workplace electric vehicle charging as electricity grid support”, financed by the Swedish Energy Agency. The project is a collaboration between Uppsala University, Mälardalen University, Vasakronan AB, EPspot AB and Idun Real Estate AB, and will investigate how workplace-based controlled electric vehicle charging with local solar power generation can participate in Svenska Kraftnäts grid support markets.
The position entails developing statistical and machine learning models for grid support via ancillary services from smart electric vehicle charging and vehicle-to-grid (V2G). It includes developing and utilizing optimization and probabilistic forecasting methodology for estimating availability of electric vehicle battery capacity on both single electric vehicle level and on city-scale. Part of the work is in collaboration with the companies in the project, where scientific results are to be used in their system.
The main task for a doctoral student is the doctoral education, which includes both participation in research projects and postgraduate courses. The tasks may also include participation in teaching and other departmental work, however limited to a maximum of 20% of the working hours.
RequirementsTo meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must
– hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in engineering, or
– have completed at least 240 credits in higher education, with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
– have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.
Additional qualifications
The candidate should be strong in statistical and machine learning methodology, leading work as well as being effective in collaborative work.
