PhD student in quantum enhanced microscopy

项目介绍

We now seek a highly qualified and motivated PhD student (f/m/x) to drive the development of a novel quantum enhanced microscope.

The Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging (IBMI) at Helmholtz Munich and the Chair of Biological Imaging (CBI) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) are an integrated, multi-disciplinary research unit, which provide bioengineering solutions to urgent societal needs. IBMI scientists develop next-generation imaging and sensing methods to measure previously inaccessible properties of living systems, hence, catalyzing breakthroughs in biology, medicine, and the environment. Comprising 12 inter-disciplinary laboratories and scientists from more than 25 countries, IBMI offers state-of-the-art infrastructure for innovative research and an ideal environment to accelerate your career. We now seek a highly qualified and motivated PhD student (f/m/x) to drive the advancement and application of a novel multimodal microscope. The Mission:

The successful candidate will play a central role in pioneering quantum-enabled methodologies for biomedical research. The project focuses on developing a next-generation microscope that seamlessly integrates visible-light and mid‑infrared microscopy with cutting-edge quantum techniques. This includes the full workflow from conceptual design and instrument development to performance characterization and application in biological tissue.

Working across this entire pipeline offers a rare opportunity to help shape a technology from its earliest foundations through to its first biomedical use cases. The project aims to significantly accelerate the adoption of quantum approaches within life sciences and demonstrate their transformative potential for biomedical imaging.

Your Profile:

The successful applicant must have the following:

• Master’s degree in physics or optics.
• Excellent track of records.
• Strong motivation, scientific curiosity, and commitment to scientific excellence.
• Programming skills in MATLAB / Phyton
• Team player skills and enthusiasm to work in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative environment.
• Excellent command of the English language.

Our Offer:

We offer the unique chance to play a role and make a difference in future healthcare. At CBI, we strongly believe in scientific excellence and innovation. This is your opportunity to be part of and to advance your career at a world-leading research institute, where bioengineering principles meet today’s challenges in biology, medicine, and environmental health, toward developing the solutions of tomorrow. You will be part of a dynamic, professional, and highly motivated team within a stimulating environment and gain international exposure through our partners and collaborators across Europe and the world. TUM offers a wide variety of inspiring and challenging PhD programs, which will supplement your research training with outstanding opportunities for career development, continued education and life-long learning.

Situated on the foothills of the Alps, Munich is consistently ranked as one of the most vibrant and enjoyable cities in the world, with an exceptionally high quality of life. The greater Munich area is also home to several world-class universities, research centers and biomedical entrepreneurship and industry, creating a truly stimulating intellectual atmosphere.

The successful applicant will initially have a 3-year contract, with the possibility of extension. Furthermore, we have the ability to provide a long-term perspective, if mutual expectations are met. Salary will commensurate with work experience and seniority (TV EntgO Bund 13-75%). We welcome diversity and applications from talented people regardless of gender, cultural background, nationality, ethnicity, sexual identity, physical abilities, religion, and age. The position is suitable for filling with severely disabled persons. Severely disabled applicants will be given preference granted otherwise essentially equal suitability, ability and professional performance.

Your Application:

We are looking forward to receiving your comprehensive online application, including your letter of motivation, CV, and academic transcripts of records, preferably in English.
