The Department of Earth Sciences is one of Europe’s most comprehensive earth science departments, with approximately 300 employees. The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science encompasses education and research in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. More information on the programme’s science can be found at Luval.

Duties

The project focuses on the investigation of zonal jets in planetary atmospheres, their origin and how they are expected to evolve in a changing climate. Spectral 2D and 3D numerical solvers based on spherical harmonics will be used for the project to perform simulations aimed to identify a model able to explain the presence of zonal jets. You will be based at the Dept. of Earth Sciences in Uppsala, but will be expected to travel both nationally and internationally. The position is full-time for four years and may be extended due departmental duties up to 20%.

Requirements

To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must

• hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in physics, mathematics, engineering, or
• have completed at least 240 credits in higher education, with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
• have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.

Good oral and written proficiency in English is required. The candidate is expected to have good numerical programming skills and knowledge of fluid dynamics. We are looking for a graduate student who can work independently and take initiative. You should enjoy developing and testing new ideas. You need to have good cooperation skills as the work involves collaborations with different international research networks.

Additional qualifications

Experience in programming languages (Python, C, Fortran, etc.) and with numerical codes for fluid dynamics is a merit. Knowledge of geophysical fluid dynamics and planetary atmospheres is considered as a merit.

The employment is a temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7. Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date 1 March 2026 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
