项目介绍
This PhD position is aimed at exploring computer architecture solutions for processing-in-memory acceleration of deep learning applications. These applications are extremely important for many applications such as autonomous vehicles, where there are serious performance demands combined with strict power and energy budgets. Novel extremely efficient devices need to be explored.
Project description
This position is part of AutoPiM, a 5-year project funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research. The project aims to develop novel, energy-efficient accelerators using processing-in-memory (PiM) technology, specifically for Deep Learning (DL) applications in autonomous vehicles. This is a collaborative initiative between research teams, where Chalmers focuses on Near-Memory Processing, and our partners concentrate on In-Memory Processing architectures and tools.
The primary research goal is to develop efficient DL implementations for autonomous vehicles in a post-Moore and post-Dennard era. More specifically, we will investigate and design combined Near- and In-Memory dual-PiM architectures and a tool to map DL models onto the hardware. This dual approach aims to significantly reduce latency, power consumption, and cost in mobile DL applications. By the end of the project, a prototype chip is expected to be produced.
Information about the division
The project will be hosted by the Division of Computer Networks and Systems within the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Chalmers University. The division includes four faculty members, four postdocs, and eleven PhD students, all actively engaged in computer architecture research. The group is well-funded, with support from both national and EU projects, and its faculty have received prestigious grants such as the ERC Advanced Grant. Our team also contributes to leading European projects, including the European Processor Initiative (EPI) and various EuroHPC projects. The results of our research are regularly published in top-tier conferences and journals.
This position is part of our growing focus on the design of advanced Domain-Specific Architectures (DSA) and accelerators. International students consistently rate Chalmers highly, particularly praising the quality of teaching and assessment. In fact, Chalmers was ranked as the world’s top university in terms of student satisfaction in the International Student Barometer. Moreover, with the launch of our MSc programs in High-Performance Computer Systems and Data Science, this PhD project is perfectly aligned with our core educational efforts.
Major responsibilities
As a PhD student at Chalmers, you have a five-year employment to carry out the research and course work needed to obtain a PhD degree. In addition, you will be helping out with teaching tasks to an amount of 20% of your time typically as a teaching assistant.
