Job description
The PhD student will be included as an integrated part of the research activities in the LHMI group, with a special focus on the functional role of gut microbiota-derived extracellular vesicles in disease models. The emphasis will be on the communicative potential of these vesicles in the gut-brain-metabolic axis.
The LHMI group operates a state-of-the-art molecular biology laboratory and maintains close collaborations with clinical departments. We work with numerous national and international partners, and our team is multidisciplinary, consisting of molecular biologists, engineers, biomedicine experts, physicians, and laboratory technicians.
We are focused on the human microbiome and its impact on various areas of neuroscience and metabolism, including diabetes, depression, autism, ADHD, and Alzheimer’s disease.
We are looking for a talented individual to join our team and contribute to groundbreaking research in this exciting field.
Qualifications:
- A Master´s degree in molecular biology, biomedicine, or a related field is required.
- Candidates with experience and knowledge in the human gut microbiome will be prioritized.
- Strong laboratory skills, including experience with nucleic acid extraction, NGS and 3rd generation sequencing, PCR, cell culture work, and animal models.
- Excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral.
- Ability to work independently while also being an effective team player.
- Experience with clinical research in a hospital setting is highly desirable.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master’s degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School in Medicine, Biomedical Science and Technology in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
Assessment
The assessment of candidates for the position will be carried out by qualified experts.
Shortlisting will be applied. This means that after the application deadline, the head of the department, with the assistance of the hiring committee, will select the applicants to be assessed. All applicants will be informed whether they have been shortlisted for assessment or not.
When the hiring process is completed, a final rejection will be sent to the applicants who are not considered for the position.

Wages and employment
