项目介绍
If you are building your career as a scientist in advanced manufacturing, materials innovation, or data‑driven process modelling – and you are looking for a PhD position where your work can shape the sustainable production technologies of tomorrow – this opportunity is for you.
At DTU, you will push the boundaries of what is possible in polymer processing and natural fibre composites by developing next‑generation over‑moulding processes with real industrial impact. As a PhD student, you will work at the forefront of digital manufacturing research, combining experimental processing, material characterisation, simulation, and in‑situ process monitoring. You will collaborate closely with industry leaders and academic experts across Europe, gaining a unique profile that integrates scientific excellence with hands‑on industrial relevance – an ideal foundation for an ambitious research career.
The PhD position is part of the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska‑Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network ‘ENDURE’ on Enabling Scaled Production of Durable Natural Fibre Components coordinated by the Technical University of Denmark.
The PhD project is anchored at the Section of Manufacturing Engineering of the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, where important societal challenge of increasing sustainability of production (both environmental and economic) sets the overall vision for the work in the section. This in particular involves adopting the Industry4.0 framework and establishing the digital twin of manufactured products by the combination of process monitoring by sensors and process modelling,

Responsibilities
Your overall purpose will be to develop, model, and validate a novel over molding process for natural fiber materials (NFMs) that meets strict industrial requirements for adhesion, mechanical performance, and barrier properties. You will work at the intersection of experimental polymer processing, natural fiber composite engineering, digital manufacturing and simulation technologies. Through close collaboration with dedicated industrial and academic partners, you will generate new scientific insights and deliver actionable results that enable industrial implementation of sustainable fibre-based packaging solutions.
Your primary tasks will be to:
- Develop and run laboratory scale over molding experiments with natural fiber materials
- Characterize fiber distribution, adhesion, mechanical properties, and barrier performance
- Develop and integrate simulation models for material behavior and over molding flow
- Implement in situ process monitoring and analyze real time sensor data
- Optimize processing parameters using modelling and data driven approaches
- Validate models through iterative comparison with experiments and uncertainty quantification
- Contribute to integration and demonstration of the developed process at industrial partners
Qualifications
To succeed in this role, you must have:
- A two-year MSc degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent in mechanical engineering, materials engineering, polymer engineering, manufacturing engineering, or a closely related field
- A strong foundation in materials processing, polymer/composite materials, or manufacturing technologies
- Experience with experimental laboratory work and data analysis
- Interest in numerical simulation and/or process modelling
- The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a multidisciplinary, international environment
- Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken
