PhD Research Fellowship in the Study of Religion

项目介绍

The PhD position is linked to the Norwegian Research Council-funded research project “Analysing violent variations in ancient Jewish narrative” (AViVa), which will analyse the conveyed norms of violence in depictions of warfare and organised conflict in ancient Jewish literature (c. 5th century BCE to 3rd century CE). AViVa’s main goal is to examine variation in episodes of violence over the course of conflict and to trace how excessive or norm-breaking violence was narrated in Jewish accounts of ancient wars involving large-scale Jewish participation.

The PhD position is connected to AViVa’s work package about violence and identity in biblical, ancient Jewish and/or related texts, examining how those who instigate or order excess violence are characterised. We invite projects seeking to answer how conceptions of violence interact with elements of identity creation, and how narratives of violence affect identity formulation. Projects which examine character profiles, group classification, and stereotyping function in narratives of extended conflicts are also welcome. Projects are expected to engage with narrative analysis of the sources identified for research.

The PhD candidate is expected to formulate and carry out an independent study within this topic.
