PhD Research Fellow in organic synthesis / organic chemistry

The subject area for the position is organic chemistry with a focus on photochemistry and modern reaction technologies. The project aims to develop and investigate photoresponsive molecular systems for light-driven energy storage and conversion, with photoswitches representing a central class of compounds within the project. The successful candidate will work on the synthesis, characterization, and investigation of functional molecular systems and their photochemical properties. A major focus will be on understanding light-induced processes, evaluating molecular performance, and identifying promising candidates through systematic screening approaches. The project further involves the development and optimization of synthetic and analytical workflows. Modern reaction technologies such as high-throughput experimentation (HTE), flow chemistry, and automated screening approaches will be integrated into the project. Depending on the candidate’s background and interests, the work may also involve aspects of process development, automation, and platform development for chemical synthesis and analysis.

The candidate will become part of an interdisciplinary research environment and will have opportunities to collaborate within the NorHTE initiative and related research activities at the Department of Chemistry.

About the project/work tasks:

  • Applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent education in organic chemistry. Master students can apply provided they complete their final master exam before 31.07.2026. It is a condition of employment that the master’s degree has been awarded.
  • Experience in synthetic organic chemistry is required. 
  • Experience with running and interpretation of NMR spectra is required.
  • Experience with use of modern analytical and spectroscopic methods, such as UV/Vis, fluorescence, IR spectroscopy or chromatography is an advantage.
  • Experience in other analytical tools, such as thermal analysis techniques, is an advantage.
  • Experience or interest in one or more of the following areas is considered an advantage: photochemistry, flow chemistry, high-throughput experimentation (HTE) and screening methods, automation and data-driven workflows, organometallic chemistry, and multistep organic synthesis.
  • Experience with programming, automation, or engineering-related aspects of chemical systems is an advantage.
  • Experience from conducting synthesis under dry conditions is an advantage.
  • Interest in interdisciplinary research and modern reaction technologies is an advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must have good written and oral English skills

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

Special requirements for the position 
The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications. If necessary, the university will apply for an export license before an offer of employment is made. If UiB has not received a positive response to the export license application within 16 weeks, the position may be offered to another applicant.

The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with the possibility for a 4th year contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department and will be decided by the head of department upon appointment. If a 4th year is granted, one year of career-promoting work associated with teaching, dissemination or research infrastructure/services, will be distributed over the full employment period and thus corresponding to 25 per cent of the time each year.

The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a qualifying post (e.g. research fellow, research assistant).

The deadline for applying for admission to the PhD programme at The Faculty of Science and Technology is 2 months after you start your position or after the start of the research project that will lead to the PhD degree.   • approved documentation of proficiency in English (if required, cf. English language requirements for PhD admission)
  • a list of any works of a scientific nature (publication list with links)
