Job description

Position as PhD Research Fellow in Mathematics available at the Department of Mathematics. 

The start date is flexible, but no later than 1st of October 2026.

The fellowship period is three years. 

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.

Place of work is the Department of Mathematics, Blindern, Oslo.

This position is part of the research project “Towards Matching Bounds in Large Deviations” (TOMABOLD), funded by the Research Council of Norway.  The PhD position will focus on the large deviation analysis of probabilistic models, and associated problems in PDE, with emphasis on identifying both well- and ill-posed examples and the interplay between probabilistic analysis and the analysis of partial differential equations (PDE). Examples of models in the scope of the project include particle models, stochastic PDE and models from fluid dynamics and machine learning.

What skills are important in this role?

Qualification requirements:

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

  • Master’s degree, or equivalent, in mathematics or applied mathematics.
  • Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • A strong theoretical education in mathematics. The appointed fellow should have expertise in probability theory or PDE theory to the level of a Master’s degree, and basic familiarity with both. Prior knowledge of specific subdisciplines for the examples listed in the description may be advantageous but is not required.

Candidates without a master’s degree have time until August 1st 2026 to complete the final exam. Applications are welcome from candidates who expect to complete the required degree by this date; any offer will be conditional upon its completion.

The norm is as follows:

  • the average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor’s degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system
  • the average grade point for courses included in the Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
  • the Master’s thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system
