PhD position in theoretical physics

项目介绍

About the position

A PhD position is available in the research group of Jeroen Danon, part of the section Quantum Spintronics at the Department of Physics, NTNU in Trondheim, Norway. The candidate will join and become part of an international research environment in quantum condensed matter theory and experiments.

The PhD position is in the field of theoretical quantum condensed matter physics and has a duration of three years

Duties of the position

The candidate will develop models to understand superconducting proximity effects in lower-dimensional semiconductor-based hole gases and investigate the implications for quantum-technological devices based on such “super-semi” hole gases, including (Andreev) spin qubits, superconducting gatemon qubits, artificial Kitaev chains, superconducting diodes, and more. We will mostly use analytical methods, to derive simple effective Hamiltonians allowing us to understand the detailed nature of the Andreev reflection processes at the super-semi-interface and to describe the superconducting correlations induced in the proximitized hole gas. Based on this understanding, we then analyze the physics of hole-gas-based (Coulomb-blockaded) proximitized islands and Josephson junctions, which are basic building blocks for more complex quantum devices, and we focus on discovering new device functionalities that are specifically enabled by the complex spin-orbital physics present in semiconductor-based hole gases.

Required selection criteria

  • The applicant for the PhD position must have an MSc (or equivalent) in theoretical physics or nanotechnology or a closely related field. We require a solid background in condensed matter theory or related theoretical areas in physics or nanotechnology.
  • Your course of study must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course, where 120 credits have been obtained at master’s level.
  • You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master’s degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be considered if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
  • You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty’s Doctoral Programme.
  • The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. Such evidence might be represented by the results of standard tests such as TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). The candidate’s language skills might also be assessed in a personal interview.

PLEASE NOTE: For detailed information about what the application must contain, see paragraph “About the application”.
