About the project
This position focuses on understanding the global properties of solutions to the Einstein-Vlasov system, supervised by Håkan Andréasson. The project encompasses a mix of theoretical and computational challenges, including:

  • Investigating black hole formation and the weak cosmic censorship conjecture
  • Studying the stability of static and stationary solutions
  • Exploring connections between the Einstein-Vlasov and Einstein-Dirac systems

You can tailor your research to your interests, working with either analytic methods (within the area of partial differential equations and functional analysis) or numerical approaches to solve the Einstein equations coupled with matter fields

Your role and responsibilities
You will join the Applied Mathematics graduate program at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Chalmers University of Technology. As a PhD student, you will:

  • Develop your own research ideas and contribute to advancing the field
  • Share your findings through presentations and written publications
  • Engage in up to 20% departmental activities, such as teaching or outreach

As part of this role, you will have opportunities to:

  • Present your work at international conferences
  • Collaborate with researchers at leading institutions worldwide

Who we are looking for
We welcome candidates with:

  • A Master’s degree (corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits) in mathematics, applied mathematics, or a related field. Candidates expecting to complete their degree by the start of employment (August-September 2025) are also encouraged to apply.
  • A keen interest in one or more of the following areas:
    • Partial differential equations
    • Differential geometry
    • General relativity
    • Functional analysis
    • Computational methods for partial differential equations
    • The particle-in-cell method
  • Strong communication skills in English (oral and written).

We understand that skills and experience come in many forms, so we encourage you to apply even if you do not meet every listed qualification but are passionate about the research area.

Application procedure
The application should be written in English be attached as PDF-files, as below. Maximum size for each file is 40 MB. Please note that the system does not support Zip files.
