PhD position
We welcome you as an applicant for a vacant PhD position in Human-AI Interaction (creativity, learning, and artificial intelligence) at SLATE,Faculty of Psychology. The position is a fixed-term appointment for 4 years, associated with the AI LEARN centre and is financed by the University of Bergen.
About AI LEARN and the Norwegian AI Centres
AI LEARN is a new national centre dedicated to the empowerment of human learning through responsible, human-centred artificial intelligence. In a world where AI systems are reshaping how we learn, work, create, lead, and participate in democracy, our centre tackles the promise and peril of hybrid intelligence—humans and machines working and learning together. Our mission is to establish an internationally leading interdisciplinary hub that advances foundational research, responsible innovation, robust governance and broad capacity building. AI LEARN is a consortium comprising of 35 national and international partners from academia and the public and private sectors.
Six national research centres for Artificial Intelligence are set to launch in the fall of 2025. These centres will foster interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers to address societal challenges, understand the impact of AI, develop new technologies, and drive innovation across both the business and public sectors. This initiative is established and financed through the government’s significant investment in artificial intelligence over the next five years (regjeringen.no) (in Norwegian).
About the project/work tasks:
This position is linked to a cluster of projects addressing hybrid intelligence. The project explores how humans and artificial intelligence (GenAI) collaborate in creative and knowledge-building processes across different learning contexts – from higher education to working life.

About the work tasks:
- investigate how multi-agent ecosystems (humans and AI) interact in creative processes in teamwork, dialogue, knowledge development, and problem-solving
- analyze how educators and/or leaders use GenAI tools to promote innovation and develop organizational practices
- map the cognitive, emotional, and technical skills required in hybrid intelligence and collaboration between humans and AI
- contribute to developing new insights into how dialogue and interaction between humans and AI can foster creativity and learning in educational and professional contexts
- active participation in the activities at AI LEARN and contribute to the life of the Centre
- the workplace is Bergen, Norway
Qualifications and personal qualities:
You must:
- hold a master’s degree or the equivalent in pedagogy, educational technology, learning sciences, organisational psychology, innovation, ICT in learning, or equivalent, at the time of applying
- have relevant experience from conducting research in education and/or work life or learning technology, creativity, or related areas
- have experience with qualitative research methods, such as interviews and/or design-based research
- be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have good collaboration skills
- possess excellent written and oral English skills
It is an advantage if you:
- have research experience on creative processes in learning contexts
- have an interest in creativity, knowledge development, and human–AI interaction
- have command of a Scandinavian language, written and oral, as some of the research will take place in Norwegian speaking workplaces
A grade of B or higher on the master’s thesis is normally required for admission to the PhD program at the faculty. Personal qualities will be emphasized. Ambition and potential will also be taken into account in the assessment of candidates.

About the PhD position: The duration of the PhD position is 4 years. At least three years of work should be dedicated to the doctoral research. The remaining time is allocated to other career-promoting work that will help you qualify for relevant careers that require research competence. You cannot be employed in a PhD-position for more than one fixed term period at the same institution.
About the PhD programme:
As a PhD Candidate, you must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 4 years. When your qualifications for the position are evaluated, you will also be evaluated for admission to a PhD programme at the Faculty of Psychology.
