PhD position in condensed matter theory

项目介绍

Are you interested in working with materals physics, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favourable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a PhD position at Uppsala University.

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over nine divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 100 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities. The PhD student will perform theoretical investigations and simulations of the elastic and inelastic scattering of fast electrons on condensed matter systems. Currently within the group there is a strong focus on studies of vibrational properties and magnetism. New theoretical models are being developed and implemented.

Duties
The research tasks will include developments of the theory of elastic and inelastic scattering of fast electrons on solids, as well as implementation of the methods into a simulation software, simulations and analysis of the results. Part of the simulations will be performed on high performance computing centers. A variety of simulation software packages will be used, including for example multislice method, molecular dynamics, atomistic spin dynamics, and others. Group of Jan Rusz offers opportunities to participate in a research network with close collaboration with leading experimental and theoretical groups within the field.

RequirementsTo meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must

  • hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in theoretical or computational physics or in materials science, or
  • have completed at least 240 credits in higher education, with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
  • have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.

The prospective applicant is expected to have a strong interest in modern theoretical physics and to be strongly motivated. Good knowledge of theoretical physics and of solid-state physics.

Additional qualifications
Excellent exam marks are considered an asset, as well as previous experience with simulations of scattering of fast electrons on solids and/or experience with code development. Good communication skills both orally and in written English are desirable.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7. Scope of employment 100 %.Starting date 1st of September 2024or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
