PhD-position at the Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care

项目介绍

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care, Section for epidemiology and medical statistics (EPISTAT), two full-time PhD-positions are available for a period of three (3) years. The positions are part of the project “The role of pregnancy and perinatal factors in maternal and offspring cancer risk: The impact of women’s complete reproductive histories (CORECA)” at Centre for Translational Research in Epidemiology (TRACE), and are funded by Trond Mohn Research Foundation and the University of Bergen.

About the project/work tasks:

  • The reproductive history of a woman, e.g., number and timing of pregnancies, intervals between births, and pregnancy complications, has a long-lasting impact on her future cancer risk. In utero exposures as well as own reproductive history may also have an impact on later cancer risk in the offspring.
  • In this comprehensive translational project, we will explore the impact of women’s total reproductive history on future maternal and offspring cancer risk and mortality. We will use data from nationwide population-based registries and databases such as the Medical Birth Registry of Norway and the Cancer Registry of Norway and apply machine learning methods and causal inference methodology (e.g., sibling designs and instrumental variable analyses) to identify patterns and risk factors for maternal and offspring cancer in relation to the women’s full reproductive history. Similar Danish registry data will be used to validate our findings.
  • The PhD candidates will perform analyses in large, linked registry data.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must possess a master’s degree or equivalent in the field of epidemiology, public health, medicine, informatics, statistics  or a related discipline.
  • Experience from relevant research projects will be considered as positive
  • The candidate should be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate well with others
  • Ability and motivation to carry out a PhD project
  • The applicant must be fluent in oral and written English, see documentation requirements

The applicant’s personal suitability for the position is a significant factor in the evaluation.

Applicant whose education is from another country than Norway, need to also attach a certified translation of the diploma and transcript of grades to English or a Scandinavian language, if the original is not in any of these languages. It is also required that the applicant enclose a review from the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir) whether the education (bachelor and master degree) in question is of a scope and level that corresponds to the level of a Norwegian master’s degree. Please see https://hkdir.no/en/ for more information about HK-dir’s general recognition. The review from HK-dir may take some time and the application should be sent to HK-dir as soon as you have decided to apply for the position. If no answer within the application deadline, you must enclose documentation from HK-dir that they have received your application. Please note that the automatic recognition offered by HK-dir is not sufficient, and will not be accepted as basis for admission to the PhD programme. Applicants with education from a Nordic country or medical degree from the EEA area and a license to practice medicine in Norway are exempt from the requirement for HK-dir assessment, see Admission requirements at the Faculty of Medicine | Faculty of Medicine | UiB
