PhD in the research project KnowAI

项目介绍

About the position

A Doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1017) in Media and Communication is available at the Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo.

The PhD position is linked to the research project «The Impact of Generative Artificial Intelligence on Political Knowledge, Opinion Formation, and Democracy» (KnowAI), funded by the Research Council of Norway and led by Professor Rune Karlsen. KnowAI’s starting point is that generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), such as ChatGPT, can reinforce, but also counteract, societal trends that drive us apart: increasing knowledge gaps, misinformation, echo chambers, diminishing social and political trust, as well as deepening polarization. The project investigates how knowledge acquisition and opinion formation in a media context are characterized by artificial intelligence, with a focus on how different types of GenAI interact with individuals’ motivation, skills, trust, and cognitive bias. The research group combines expertise from political communication, political science, sociology, digital media studies and computer science to study these questions.

The PhD fellow will have opportunities to contribute across the work packages in the project but will be a key person in the work package (WP2) “Contextual and in-depth inquiry into AI use and its consequences”, which has a qualitative and contextual approach to how GenAI forms knowledge opinion formation. Applicants must prepare a project description that describes the problem, theory, methodological approach, as well as how their project will contribute to KnowAI. Interested applicants are encouraged to contact the principal investigator to be sent the original project description.UiO/ Anders Lien
