Job description
In the LEAP project (Leveraging Energy-Aware Programming), we will investigate if it is possible to develop a model for energy-aware programming and implement the needed tools to support it. This PhD position will be the main research position.
The idea of an energy-aware programming model is to support the programmer, such that programming choices for lower energy consumption become clearer. In the project, you will work with methods to better quantify and evaluate the efficiency of specific and representative programs. To evaluate the programs and different program transformation, you will need to understand their behaviour. This is not different from how efficiency of programs is investigated by running the programs. This work will be supported by laboratories and researchers at Roskilde University, Denmark, that have studied several aspects on software’s energy consumption and is working on a testing bench; it is therefore expected that you will have extended research stays here.
In all, the goal of this PhD project is to build a foundation for understanding and quantifying of energy consumption for modern hardware, languages, compilers and run-time system. This will include research in measuring the energy consumption of different aspect computing systems and programming languages. Based on this, you will research tool, programming languages and/or programming models that can aid programmers in understanding or mitigating energy aspects of their programs.

Qualification requirements
The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.
- Master’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science
- Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system
- Prior knowledge of programming language technology and transformation, including compilers, program transformation and program analysis, is required
Desired qualifications:
- Prior knowledge of programming language design, including formal semantics or type systems, is desired
- Prior knowledge of modern computing systems and their design is desired
- Prior knowledge of methods and practical work in statistical analysis is desired
Grade requirements:
The norm is as follows:
• The average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor’s degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system
• The average grade point for courses included in the Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
• The Master’s thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.
The fellowship requires admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The application to the PhD programme must be submitted to the department no later than two months after taking up the position.
