项目介绍
There is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow in climate dynamics at the Geophysical Institute and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4th year with career-promoting work (e.g. teaching duties at the Department). The position is associated with the projects PARCIM, Dynasor and Combined (funded by the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research and Norwegian Research Council respectively).
About the project/work tasks
The North Atlantic Ocean displays pronounced decadal to multidecadal temperature variability that has far-reaching impacts, influencing Arctic climate, weather extremes, and marine ecosystems. The appointed PhD candidate will address several key questions about decadal variability in the North Atlantic. This includes studying atmosphere-ocean interactions, assessing the relative roles of external forcing and internal, and links to high latitudes.
The PhD candidate will utilize a new and novel coupled millennium reanalysis, which uses modern data assimilation and extensive paleo-proxy archive, in addition to designing and performing targeted modelling experiments, such as wind stress pacemaker experiments.
As a PhD-candidate at the Geophysical Institute at University of Bergen, you will also be affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR). BCCR is the largest climate research centre in the Nordic countries and has a broad international environment.
Qualifications and personal qualities
- Applicants must hold a master’s degree or the equivalent in physical oceanography, meteorology, climate dynamics, physics, applied mathematics or related fields. Alternatively, a master thesis must have been submitted for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the master’s degree has been awarded.
- A good understanding of ocean and/or climate dynamics is required.
- Experience in statistical analysis of ocean/climate data (observations or model output) is a requirement.
- Experience in scientific programming (e.g., Matlab, Python) is an advantage.
- Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative skills.
