About the position
Do you have a Master’s degree (or are in the process of completing one) in Business Administration with strong academic results? Are you eager to delve into research and contribute to the development of knowledge in the field? If so, you might be the candidate we are looking for!
We are seeking up to two highly motivated PhD candidates who wish to pursue a doctorate in Business Administration. As a PhD Candidate with us, you will work to achieve your doctorate, and at the same time gain valuable experience that qualifies you for a further career in higher education and research, in and outside academia.
The academic community at NTNU Business School produces a significant amount of research both in terms of basic research, applied research and dissemination. Relevant subjects for the PhD candidates are management accounting and control, financial accounting, finance, business analytics, marketing, organization, strategy, and management. Technology and sustainability are also key strategic priorities for NTNU Business School, ensuring that our research remains relevant and forward-thinking.
As a PhD candidate, you will have the opportunity to become part of one of our four research centers:
- Center for Accounting and Innovation in the Public Sector
- Center for Real Estate and Environmental Economics
- Centre for Banking and Finance
- NTNU Centre for Sport Management Research

PhD candidates are given the opportunity to travel to build networks with other researchers in the field and to participate in international research conferences and PhD courses.
NTNU Business School offers a supportive and inclusive work environment and is located in modern facilities in the Adolf Øien Building at Campus Elgeseter in Trondheim.
Your immediate leader will be the Head of the Department.
Duties of the position
As a PhD candidate, you will develop research questions relevant to the field of Business Administration in consultation with your supervisor. During the first three months of your employment, you will work with your supervisor to develop a detailed project description.
An approved project description is a prerequisite for admission to the PhD program, which provides academic and methodological training at the doctoral level.
Your final dissertation should contribute to the development of new academic knowledge and meet international standards within the field. We expect you to present your research at national and international scientific conferences and publish articles in peer-reviewed international journals.
Be prepared for changes to your work duties after employment.
Required selection criteria
The primary goal of the PhD position is to qualify for research positions. To be eligible for this position, you must:
- have completed (or be in the process of completing) a Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in business and economics (120 ECTS) or an equivalent program
- strong academic background from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master’s degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation
- submit a short project proposal outlining the proposed topic, research questions, theory, methods, and data (see further details under “About the Application”)
- have strong oral and written communication skills in English
- meet the admission requirements for the faculty’s PhD program
For some research projects, proficiency in a Scandinavian language is required, particularly when data collection depends on Scandinavian sources.
Master’s students are welcome to apply, but the Master’s degree must be completed and documented before the start of the position.
As a result of the new Act relating to universities and university colleges with associated regulations of 01.08.2024, NTNU has, during a transitional period (for decisions on employment in recruitment positions before 1 August 2025), chosen to use the terms of employment in the old regulations of 31 January 2006 no. 102 on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, research fellow, scientific assistant and specialist candidate

Salary and conditions
In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will be NOK 536 200,- per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund and NOK 400 for funds for organizational development initiatives.
The employment period is 3 years in a 100% position.
For employment as a PhD Candidate, it is a prerequisite that you gain admission to the PhD programme in Economics and Management within three months of your employment contract start date, and that you participate in an organized doctoral programme throughout the period of employment.
As an employee at NTNU, it is important that you keep yourself up to date with academic and organizational changes and adapt to them.
For the necessary academic and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.
The appointment is carried out in accordance with the principles of the State Employees Act, and Export control(legislation that regulates the export of knowledge, technology and services). Candidates who, after assessment of the application and attachments, are considered to bein conflict with the criteria in the latter act, will not be able to be employed.
About the application
The attachments (including a description of your scientific work) must accompany the application as these documents form the basis of the application assessment. The documents must be in Norwegian/a Scandinavian language or English. (decide on this – remove if not applicable)

- transcripts and diplomas for Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees
- CV
- certificates
- a short project proposal which describes the proposed theme, thesis question, theory, methods, and data. For project proposals requiring primary data, the proposal must explain how the data will be collected if the candidate does not speak Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish. The proposed data collection approach will be included in the evaluation of candidates
- short letter of motivation (400 words/1 page)
- academic works – published or unpublished – that you would like to be considered in the assessment (not your master’s thesis). For collaborative works, you must include a brief description of your contribution
- names and contact information of three relevant references
Documentation of a completed Master’s degree must be presented before taking up the position.
If all, or parts, of your education has been taken abroad, we also ask you to attach documentation of the scope and quality of your entire education, both Bachelor’s and Master’s education, in addition to other higher education. If your institution uses “diploma supplement” (normal for most European institutions), you must attach this. A description of the documentation required can also be found here. If you already have a statement from Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir), please attach this as well.
When assessing the best qualified, we emphasize necessary qualifications such as education, experience and personal suitability. Motivation for the position, ambitions and potential for research will also count when assessing the candidates.
