PhD Candidate in nano-enabled gas storage

项目介绍

About the position

Gas storage in solid materials is of great importance, which drives fast evolution of new technology and applications. For example, safe solid storage of hydrogen is critical for the realization of global hydrogen-fueled economy, while stable storage of CO2 is essential for the goal of Green Shift. Now more than ever, the development of solid-state storage materials for high-value gases calls for motivated future scientists and engineers to tackle the world’s pressing challenges.

Porous materials are found to be ideal for gas storage, particularly with the existence of water in the porous structure. It is critical to understand the mechanism of maximizing gas storage in porous materials for the formulation of future gas storage solutions. You are sincerely invited to join our research team if you are interested in innovating gas storage in different porous materials, including activated carbon and nano-porous calcium-silicate-hydrate (CSH). As a PhD Candidate with us, you will work to achieve your doctorate, and at the same time gain valuable experience that qualifies you for a further career in higher education and research, in and outside academia.

You will work in an interdisciplinary and multicultural research group, namely Nano- & Bio-Mechanics , and in cooperation with the Concrete group in the Department of Structural Engineering of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

About the project

The primary objective of the project is to lay a foundation of porous material solution for hydrogen and CO2 storage, expanding the territory of gas storage in solid materials. The research will focus on the understanding of the key properties of porous materials, including porous dimension, building ingredients, wettability, etc., and their interactions with water and gas species include CO2, Hydrogen and methane. Using atomistic modeling, the study will devote to design new hybrid porous materials (exemplified by activated carbon and CSH) with nanostructure templates and tailored surface wettability for the purpose of enhanced physisorption and enclathration of different gas species, aiming for formulating new hydrate-based gas solid storage materials platform for next generation safe gas storage application.

Duties of the position

  • Complete the doctoral education until obtaining a doctorate
  • Carry out computational study (atomistic modeling) focusing on the equilibrium and dynamics of gas and water molecules in porous materials
  • Probing different stable structures of gas and water in (and possible reactions with) porous materials at the nanoscale
  • Academic publications and popular science dissemination
