YOUR TASKS

PhD Position on Time-Resolved Infrared and Terahertz Spectroscopy of Covalent Organic Frameworks

Your prime goal is to understand the nature of the photo-cycle in covalent organic frameworks and colloidal nanocrystals, starting from light absorption to eventual redox chemistry. To study the effect of optical excitations on covalent organic frameworks, this PhD topic will employ femtosecond optical pump – infrared/terahertz probe spectroscopy. Doing so, we mimic the light absorption process that triggers the photo-catalytic cycle via the ‘pump’ and then use a probe to look at the structural changes in the COF network. The latter is possible by shifting the probe’s spectral range first to the infrared and terahertz part of the spectrum (500 – 4000 cm-1), which provides direct information on bond angles, vibrations, displacements, … Next to this, the complementary terahertz (THz) probe (0- 500 cm-1) also provides information on the transport of the photo-generated charges in the COF structure. The infrared probe is available today, but the THz is not. As such, your job will be first to build an optical pump – terahertz probe setup capable of detecting optically induced changes in the THz window with sub-picosecond time-resolution. For this, you will be supported by a post-doc in the team with experience on the topic to build the equipment from scratch. Next, you will use both of these setups (IR, THz) to probe both carrier transport and photo-induced structural changes in the frameworks supplied by the synthesis-oriented PhD students in the iBOF project.

Job profile

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You are a motivated, diligent and punctual person capable of teamwork and with attention to detail and rigor.
  • You hold a Master’s degree Master in Physics, Applied Physics, Photonics or equivalent.
  • Experience in building and/or working with (THz) optical setups and Python coding is an advantage.
  • Experience with ultrafast lasers and/or optical pump-probe techniques is an advantage.
    .

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU
