Job description

  • The PhD candidate writes a doctoral thesis under the supervision of Prof. Bart Cockx (Department of Economics, UGent) and dr. Sam Desiere (https://www.ugent.be/eb/economics/en).
  • The PhD candidate will mainly work on the research project ‘Payroll Tax Reductions: Incidence on Employment, Wages and Firm Performance’, funded by the Flemish Research Foundation (FWO), which can be found here (https://www.dropbox.com/s/v6yz8xx36b5vfs8/FWO_project%20final.pdf?dl=0. (S)he will also be involved in the research project ‘Shift Work: Facts, Value, and (Hidden) Costs’, which studies trends in shift work across the EU and evaluates the effectiveness of wage subsidies for night and shift workers in Belgium, and may also be involved in future projects on the evaluation of wage and hiring subsidies. In mutual agreement with the supervisors, (s)he is encouraged (but is not required) to orient the research in a more personal direction by applying for a personal (FWO) PhD Fellowship starting in the academic year 2022-23 (https://www.fwo.be/en/fellowships-funding/phd-fellowships/phd-fellowship-fundamental-research/).
  • The researcher aims at obtaining a PhD degree in economics of UGent. This will comprise the completion of a doctoral training programme which includes advanced courses within the Belgian Graduate School in Economics, and attending and presenting research in seminars and international conferences. Job profile

  • As of the date of hiring, you are holder of a Master degree in Economics, Business Economics, Business Engineering, or Statistics (or a related field), which you should have completed at least with honours (or belong to the top 20% of the class). Candidates who do not have a master’s degree that was awarded in a country of the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland must also submit GRE test scores or GMAT scores (percentile ranking).
  • You can work independently, accurately and systematically.
  • You have an interest in applied quantitative methods, labour economics and micro-econometric evaluation of labour market policies.
  • You enjoy analysing data, writing papers and presenting your research.
  • You are proficient in English. Knowledge of Dutch and/or French is not required but is an asset.

Offer:

  • A fully-funded, full-time PhD position for one year, with the possibility of renewal up to three additional years.
  • A PhD in Economics (after approximately 4 years of successful research).
  • Being part of a team of several PhD students who conduct fascinating research on, amongst other, short-time work, shift work, hiring subsidies, job search and school-to-work transitions.
  • A PhD scholarship (exempt from income taxes) of the order of 2,100 € per month, and travel and computer equipment resources.
  • The preferred start date of the position is October 1, 2021 (with some flexibility).
