We invite applications for a PhD student position at the Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam. The successful candidate will be jointly supervised by Balakrishnan Chandrasekaran (https://balakrishnanc.github.io/) and Klaus von Gleissenthall (https://gleissen.github.io/) and work on techniques for building reliable networks using ideas from programming languages and formal verification.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The particular research project will be determined based on the common interests of the candidate and the supervisors, and can range from theoretical to practical. Candidates should have a strong background in computer science or mathematics; experience in either networking or formal methods/programming languages is a plus.

Your duties

  • Learn and review the state-of-the-art on verification techniques for programmable networks as well as automatic repair
  • Analyze state-of-the-art network deployments to derive dependencies and (performance as well as security) invariants between services running at different layers of the network
  • Develop “correct-by-construction” designs leveraging the programmability available across the entire network stack
  • Mentor bachelor and master students in projects that are relevant to your research interests and focus
  • Support courses relevant to your field of study such as Network Security and Verification for Security

REQUIREMENTS

An ideal candidate will satisfy the following requirements.

  • Strong background in computer science or mathematics
  • Experience in networking or formal methods or programming languages
  • Candidates must have an MSc. degree to be admitted into the doctoral program
  • Ability to speak and write in English fluently to communicate your ideas

The position is based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, where the student will be embedded in the VUSec (https://www.vusec.net/) and theory (https://www.cs.vu.nl/~tcs/) groups. WHAT ARE WE OFFERING?

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. The salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel and amounts €2,434 (PhD) per month during the first year and increases to €3,111 (PhD) per month during the fourth year, based on a full-time employment. The job profile: is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 0.8 FTE.

The appointment will initially be for 18 months. After a satisfactory evaluation of the initial appointment, the contract will be extended for a duration of 4 years.
