At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, a PhD stipend in mission-critical connectivity for cloud-connected robotic limbs is available within the general study programme "Wireless Communications." The stipend is open for appointment from October 1st, or soon as possible thereafter. In electronics engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and the societal relevance of its research programmes. The Department of Electronic Systems consists of more than 200 employees, of which about 40 % are international and about 90 are enrolled PhD students. The Department hosts 620 students. The Department’s excellent research infrastructures and facilities accentuate its global position in teaching and research. The Department’s research centres around communication, antennas, control systems, AI, sound, cyber security and robotics. The Department plays an active role in translating discoveries and results into practical applications with industrial partners and IPR. The Department provides teaching for several BSc and MSc programmes using a problem- and project-based learning model.
Recent advances in wireless connectivity and cloud/edge computing pave the way for the next generation of assistive robotic systems, like bionic limbs and exoskeletons, which will be constanly connected to the cloud. Such systems, equiped with advanced sensors, will become truly intelligent, capable to decrase the cognitive burden of control or even perform some of the tasks autonomosly. This will lead to an increased acceptance and active use of assistive robotic systems, reducing the currently high rejection rates and improving the overall quality of patients’ lifes.
The proposed concept of the cloud-connected bionic limbs is radically novel, posing many open problems that concern the interplay between connectivity, cloud functionality and user behavior. The goal of this phd project is to study the related research questions that may include (but are not limited to):
– What are the connectivity requirements to support the operation of a Cloud-connected limb? Which interfaces and communication techniques should be used to achieve the requirements?
– How can we use Cloud resources to revolutionize the capabilities of a bionic limb? What is the improvement in performance and impact on the user experience? What are the advantages and limitations of cloud-based versus edge-based computation frameworks?
– How to achieve robust functioning of the Cloud-connected robotic limb despite expected disturbances in communication (packet loss, jitter, loss of connection)?
– What are the optimal models for sharing the control between the automatic controller (Cloud) and the user and how will user react and adapt to communication disturbances?
Prospective applicants to this PhD proposal should have the following qualifications;
– M.Sc. degree in wireless communications, communications engineering, computer science or similar,
– solid mathematical and analytical skills;
– experience in programming, at least in C++, Phython or Matlab (experience with programming of sofware defined radios and/or off-the-shelf communication modules is a plus);
– a creative mindset and curiosity to research and develop new solutions in an international environment with highly skilled colleagues.
The study project will be conducted in collaboration with researchers from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Telenor and OttoBock.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master’s degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.
