The ’Drug delivery and Sensor’ section at DTU Health tech wishes to employ a PhD student within the framework of the highly interdisciplinary Center of Excellence – IDUN. IDUN is a large research center with over 40 members, with focus on development of micro and nanosensors, detection systems and drug delivery systems.
The candidate will be part of the centers sensor activities and work on the EU Horizon 2020 project titled SERSing: “Advanced Surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) based technologies for gas and liquids sensING in the area of chemical protection”. The goal of the SERSing project is to enable fast detection and identification of chemical hazards at low concentrations in gas and liquid phase.
The aim of the PhD project is to develop SERS-microfluidic devices that can be used for sampling of molecules in gas and liquid phase, and subsequently detecting chemical composition using handheld Raman spectrometers.
IDUN havs strong competences in Raman spectroscopy and SERS, both theory and instrumentation, and several years of experience in the development of nanopillar-based, high-performance SERS substrates and assays for detection of target analytes in complex matrices (e.g. biological fluids and food samples).
The PhD student will work in the area of SERS-based molecular detection. Raman spectroscopy is a well-known spectroscopy technique for identifying various molecular species. SERS, on the other hand, is a powerful experimental technique that utilizes plasmonic nanostructures to enhance otherwise very weak Raman scattering signals. This tremendous amplification of the Raman scattering signal enables detection of trace amounts of target molecules.
Responsibilities and qualifications

You will play a role in the sensing part of the research section, interacting with several members working in different disciplines, such as biology, microfabrication, pharmaceutical science and polymer science. The project is highly interdisciplinary and we expect that you enjoy teamwork and are good at coordinating you work with your colleagues.
You will design, develop and fabricate new type of SERS substrates.
- You will design and fabricate SERS-integrated microfluidic devices suitable for gas and liquid sampling and detection using portable, handheld Raman spectrometers.
- You will test their performance in collaboration with the SERSing project partners.
- You have the ability to drive the project and achieve ambitious goals.
You must have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.
The ideal candidate has background in some of the following topics: nanoplasmonics, Raman spectroscopy and/or surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), design and fabrication of microfluidic devices, and micro- and nanofabrication techniques. Experience in SERS-based molecular detection and/or centrifugal microfluidics is a plus. If you have another background that fits the project, you are welcome to apply.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
