Metasurface Optics for Chiral Molecule Detection

DTU Physics invites highly talented candidates to apply for a PhD scholarship in the field of metasurface optics. The goal of the PhD project is to develop and demonstrate a new metasurface platform for the detection of chiral molecules in the ultraviolet spectral range. Measuring the chiral structure of biomolecules is of fundamental and practical importance for understanding their chemical and biological properties. By rethinking the design of metasurfaces and using new materials, we wish to unlock the ultraviolet spectral range for ultrasensitive detection of chiral molecules.

Responsibilities and qualifications
You will work on designing, fabricating, and measuring new metasurface platforms capable of boosting the circular dichroism signal of chiral molecules in the ultraviolet spectral range. To achieve this, you will use state-of-the-art equipment available at DTU. In particular, you will have access to and become an expert in advanced measurements using electron energy-loss spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. You will also have access to state-of-the-art cleanroom facilities for sample fabrication. Experience and understanding of optical properties of nanoscale materials is preferred. 

The PhD scholarship is part of an Eurotech Alliance project between the Applied Nano-Optics group at DTU Physics and the research group of Assistant Professor Alberto G. Curto at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). As part of the PhD, you will visit the research group at TU/e for an extended period of time (up to half a year).

You should be a highly motivated student with academic excellence and/or demonstrated scientific achievements. You should be interested in doing cutting-edge research and have experience in experimental work. You will be in close collaboration with the research group at TU/e, so you should have excellent communication skills and be able to navigate in a multi-university project.

In addition, the ideal candidates:

  • Are academically curious and think deeply and creatively
  • Communicate well in both written and spoken English
  • Are empathetic, kind, and enjoy working with others from diverse backgrounds.
  • Take responsibility for the progress and quality of their projects.

You must have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) in physics, photonics, materials science or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide

Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by Assistant Professor Søren Raza (DTU) in coordination with Assistant Professor Albert G. Curto (TU/e).

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
