LEARN FROM NOBEL LAUREATE AND WORLD EXPERTS IN CUTTING EDGE MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

Our department leads research in exciting  areas of Advanced Manufacturing, Bio-inspired Materials, 2D materials, Edge Computing and Computational Materials. These innovations and materials technologies play essential roles to advance cutting-edge electronic devices and artificial Intelligence. We were ranked 4th for Teaching (Times Higher Education 2020) and 3rd for Employer Reputation (QS ranking 2019) in Asia.

INTERDISCIPLINARY CURRICULUM –ENGINEERING, INNOVATION & ENTREPRENUERSHIP

Our flexible curriculum allows students to explore interdisciplinary fields in Materials Science & Engineering, innovation and entrepreneurship. With a proper planning of your curriculum, you will have the chance to specialise in Materials Inno-prenuership, data analytics and additive manufacturing (from AY2021/2022).

Doctor of Engineering (EngD)

For application and programme details, please refer to Faculty of Engineering, Doctor of Engineering (EngD) program.

Module Requirements:

EngD students must complete 8 modules (32 MCs), of which 4 of the modules (16 MCs) shall be chosen from the area of technology management, engineering leadership and/or business administration, e.g. module MT5010 Technology Intelligence and IP Strategy.

The other 4 modules should technical modules under the discipline of Materials Science and Engineering. Among these 4 technical modules, 3 modules must be from the core and elective modules lists of PhD programme under Department of Materials Science and Engineering. The remaining 1 module can be any postgraduate module under Faculty of Engineering (excluding management module) and Faculty of Science.

EngD students do not need to complete module EG5911 Research Methodology & Ethics, but modules ES5101 Technical Communications for Engineers and MLE6999 Doctoral Seminars are still compulsory. EngD students are not allowed to take industrial attachment module MLE5666. Doctoral Seminars module MLE6999 and Graduate English Course modules (ES5101 etc.) do not contribute the total number of MC completed.

Administrative Structure

Students will be administrated by the Faculty of Engineering through the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. It is envisaged that Department will have its own administrative set-up to administer its research students, similar to that of the other departments in the Faculty of Engineering.

Admission Requirements

The prevailing requirements for admission to research degrees shall apply.   The minimum requirement for admission is a Bachelor’s degree with honours (at least 2nd Class Lower) or its equivalent.  Candidates applying for direct admission to the PhD programme are expected to obtain at least a Bachelor’s degree with honours (at least 2nd Class Upper) or its equivalent.

International candidates are expected to submit their TOEFL and GRE test scores in support of their applications.  Candidates are also expected to have the ability to pursue research in the candidate’s proposed field of advanced study.

For more information on application, fees, graduate scholarship, please refer to Graduate, Faculty of Engineering (https://www.eng.nus.edu.sg/graduate/).
