The Division WAVECORE is a multidisciplinary research group of the Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT) focusing on a broad range of topic areas ranging from electromagnetic theory, microwave/mmwave devices and circuits, to communication systems.

This PhD vacancy is in the Wave Technologies team of Prof. D. Schreurs, with long-standing experience on remote health monitoring using microwave/mmwave technologies.

Project

Current healthcare systems rely heavily on individual’s self-monitoring ability. The recent evolution on integrated sensing and communication technologies will be leveraged in this PhD research to achieve reliable remote health monitoring of vital signs. To reduce the impact of variability on the measurement results, i.e.., due to the person’s movements and unknown orientation, and thus render the subsequent vital sign extraction more effective and accurate, radar techniques combined with reconfigurable intelligent surfaces are to be explored. Both sub-6GHz and mmwave frequency bands are targeted in this research. 

This PhD is not only focused on devising algorithms but also on experimental validation. Therefore, the research is a balance between hardware set-up development, experimental testing, and measurement-based machine learning.

Profiel

MSc in electronic engineering, with background in microwave engineering and strong interest in machine learning techniques, or vice versa.
