Project title: Economic evaluation of person-centred healthcare programmes: applications in the development, implementation, and evaluation of eHealth interventions

Job assignments

The PhD education in Health Care Science comprises carrying out a scientific project and completing at least 30 credits of courses at third-cycle level. The doctoral student must also write a scientific compilation thesis or monograph corresponding to at least 120 credits. For more information about third-cycle studies at Sahlgrenska Academy, see https://www.gu.se/en/sahlgrenska-akademin/doctoral-studies

Project: Person-centredness and eHealth interventions are central components in the ongoing re-design of the health care system in Sweden and worldwide, but their evaluation is challenged by traditional economic evaluation frameworks. There is an urgent call for development of economic models to support cost containment to apply during development, implementation, and evaluation of person-centred e-health interventions. By including different person-centred eHealth interventions targeting different age groups, this PhD project will contribute with a unique opportunity to develop knowledge within this field. Thus, the aim of this PhD thesis is to develop health economic models to support decision-making during the development, implementation, and evaluation of person-centred eHealth interventions. One of the substudies will include direct contacts with patients, healthcare providers and other healthcare decision-makers in the Swedish health system. Assignments include database management and statistical analysis.

The University of Gothenburg Centre for Person-centred Care, GPCC, is a research centre located at the Institute of Health and Care Sciences. Within the network, several groups have started to develop eHealth applications to support person-centred care in different patient groups and settings. The combined information from the projects is expected to provide comprehensive knowledge on both cost-effectiveness of such initiatives and of how economic modelling can support decision-making before, during, and after their implementation. In the project, the PhD candidate will creating new knowledge both regarding dimensions important to incorporate in the evaluations of person-centred eHealth interventions and understanding of how these applications can better meet the needs of patients in different age groups and phases of life, as well as the needs of other stakeholders, including cost containment.
