Doctoral candidate position in Fluvial Research

Research area and responsibilities: The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with a project titled “Reconstruction of river system – impacts of dam removals on hydro-morphodynamics and ecosystems (RECRIVER)”. The project will focus on analysing hydrological, geomorphological and ecological effects of three consecutive dam removals and related river restoration (Hiitolanjoki River case study site), and prepare the guidelines for further follow-up impact studies. By applying field measurement and modelling methods, the doctoral candidate will determine, how the river morphodynamics and fluvial processes change when the river transforms from a fragmented one into freely flowing river system. The responses to water quality and sediment loading, and further to aquatic habitats will be analysed during the years immediately after dam removals. In addition to analysing the impacts of dam removals, the research includes future hydro-morphodynamic simulations under changing seasonal environmental conditions of the restored river.

The research plan will be formulated together with the candidate, depending on his/her interests and expertise. The candidate must have a high motivation for research and enjoy working in an international and cross-disciplinary team. The work requires participation in field measurement campaigns and their designing, application of a variety of numerical models and spatial data sets, writing of scientific publications and collaboration with the research team. The work is done in collaboration with the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) and the University of Eastern Finland, with whom pilot data have been collected from pre-dam removal conditions.

Requirements: A prospective student is expected to fulfill the following requirements.

–        Applicants must have a completed Master of Science degree in a related field.

–        A strong background in hydrological sciences and computational methods is required.

–        Familiarity with morphodynamic models, water quality models, hydrological modeling and spatial analyses is an asset.

–        Knowledge of geoinformatics, quantitative analysis and programming skills are considered as an asset.

–        Ability to work in a team, and willingness to learn.

–        Very good English proficiency.

Expectations: The applicant is expected to:

Research environment: The successful candidate will work under supervision of Assistant Professor Eliisa Lotsari. The successful applicant will have the possibility to cooperate with world-class researchers, participate in developing measurement and modelling approaches within unique dam removal environment, and attend scientific conferences and meetings. Moreover, the research group provides strong support and academic freedom, with possibilities for transdisciplinary collaboration with national and international partners from academia, industry and public sector.

Employment: The position is at the Department of Built Environment and includes limited amount of work as a teaching assistant (5%). The expected duration of doctoral studies is four years. After two years there is a midterm review, and the extension is subject to advance of studies and research. The position should start in fall (September/October) 2021 and is full-time work. Total annual work time 1612 h (no office hours). Starting salary is 2540 €.

The contract includes occupational health services, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system.
